In the span of just three weeks of IIM Udaipur, there have been many memorable moments in and outside the classrooms. From our 1st interaction with the director(through Facebook) before joining IIMU to the surprise quiz in first class; everything has its impact on MBA Diaries of any IIM Udaipur student. But this one lecture of Managerial Oral Communication(MOC) course is going to be my memorable classroom experience. It was 06-07-2018 and Professor was Mr. Sunil Unny Guptan, one of the best professors any student can wish for.
In this one session of MOC, we were supposed to give a presentation of 4-5 minutes on any topic of our choice. But before the presentations started, Professor asked us that how many of us are scared of public speaking and almost 70% of students(including me) raised their hands. Professor gave some tips to everyone and then a feedback form. Every student was supposed to give a feedback to the rest of the peers about their presentation( which included topic, content, body language, interaction and other speaking skills). He described that how this feedback from every single student is going to add something to your personality. MBA is all about learning. We are here to improve and help each other to make all of us a better person. “We are not each other’s competition”, these were his words. I have prepared my presentation on "The Secret- Law of attraction". I gave my best but I was a bit nervous about the feedbacks.
One of my weaknesses is that I get defensive when someone criticizes me. And that was the reason I was scared of the feedback from peers. But throughout the session, Professor kept on focussing on how everyone should take this as a constructive feedback. We should work on the feedback points to improve ourselves. As one of the reasons to opt for an MBA is personality development.
At the end of the session, we all collected our feedbacks from the rest of the students. And it felt so nice to read genuine feedbacks( be it positive or negative). Somethings that we generally not realize about ourselves; be it knuckle cracking for some or be it using fillers while speaking for some. It was actually a very constructive exercise. Getting so many different( and honest) opinions on your 5-6 minutes of the presentation was really helpful. I have worked on some and still working on some feedbacks.
It’s just one week and I can see the change, a positive change. And not just within me but in most of my peers. That was one session that I am never going to forget. The session taught us that none of the classes, teachers, friends, family taught us; be it confidence, body posture, communication, presentation skills, language, formal dressing and what not. But for me, the best learning was on how to take criticism. I hope till the time this course ends, I will be able to remove “I tend to get defensive when someone criticizes me” from my weaknesses. The course “ Managerial Oral Communications” and our Professor is going to be one of the main chapters of my MBA Diaries.
