If I say that this is a one-of-its-kind book that uniquely deals with grave issues with a subtlety suggestive of mature writing and simultaneously immersive, I wouldn’t be wrong. This book is an entertaining revelation that will leave you in splits while you navigate the streets of Chennai selling simcards. In this article, we bring to you a tête-à-tête with Aashisha Chakraborty, the author of the first fiction book on sales in India, Mis(s)adventures of a Salesgirl. Who is the person behind the book?

Aashisha is a PM-YUVA author and Write India winner whose debut novel - Mis(s)adventures of a Salesgirl by Rupa Publications is loosely based on her experiences as a sales manager in a major telecom firm. Her second book is a work of historical fiction with National Book Trust, tentatively titled 'The 13-year-old Queen and her inherited destiny'. She has written for various Readomania anthologies and e-books by Women’s Web and InsideIIM. Her articles have appeared in The Hindu and she has a Star Wars fan fiction column on SilverLeaf Poetry. A winner of Kaafiya (the Delhi Poetry Festival), she showcases her short stories on Readomania Premium. A compulsive reader and an avid traveler, she is an MBA from the Indian Institute of Foreign Trade, New Delhi and a computer engineer from Jamia Millia Islamia. She has also modeled for a German photographer and likes to blog on her online diary of sorts - ‘The Mind Bin’.

What is this book about? Mis(s)adventures of a Salesgirl is set in 2017 right after the time when Jio disrupted the markets with its data propositions, setting the industry aflame. Very few companies like Vodafone, Idea and Airtel could manage to stay afloat. With a telecom backdrop, this narrative captures the ground sales realities that no one tells you about - all those unwritten rules, the endless 2 am meetings, the haranguing and the sheer ordeal that goes with a sales role are amazingly depicted in this book.
How did this book come about? The writer did sales in various parts of the country and the world and found it a fascinating-ugly world that no one wanted to talk about outside of work. She decided to take the plunge, especially when she witnessed the abysmal sex ratio in the sales domain. And thence the book was born. The novel mixes her sales anecdotes and experiences along with some imagined love stories, turning it into a gallimaufry of incidents sure to draw some raised eyebrows and produce some laugh lines on your face.
