In this competitive world, everyone wants everything in life. Little do we think about how is it going to matter in the long run, or how will these small achievements make a difference on a large scale? One such factor our generation runs behind is academics. From a young age, we have been taught to excel in academics. Our whole school life revolves around it. But does it matter in the long run? As far as academics are concerned, and as an entry to the management college, it does play an important part. But it is not the only aspect on which judgement is done. I would like to elaborate on the story of a kid. A young girl of the age of seven years. All she had to do and liked doing was studying. Every day after school, she came up with her books and delved herself into her school books. Probably she connected more with the characters in history than the people around her. It was math which she enjoyed studying. She spent hours reading English prose. However, even after so many efforts, she did not rank among the toppers in her board examinations. This is when she realized that studies do matter and it is not just by studying into books that she will gain knowledge. She started exploring avenues. Learning via people interaction was the major thing she realized. She was lost at the start, not knowing where to go and what to do. However, over a while, things fell in place. She realized how important it is to manage studies and not just books. She started exploring her hobbies and realized that true peace of mind resides in finding solace in oneself. She did study with full efforts, but with a different perspective. She did not consider herself to be bound to books. Thus, her grades were fine, but she had the inner peace of mind. Thus from the management perspective too, grades do matter as they signify the major criteria of assessment to an institute, but they are not the only criteria. The overall profile of a student is considered. If you are a fresher, try to do courses on any field of management - be it human resources, finance, marketing, operations or any of your choice. This would help in building your profile. Try to understand the business world from a rational point of view. It is also advisable to read business magazines and newspapers which would help in broadening the knowledge. If you are a working professional, then probably you have a piece of knowledge about business and how it functions. Getting into a B school is all on the attitude and passion for it. Academics in B school also are an important part. But as I had already mentioned, it is more important to be aware of the world around. Life in B school is a roller coaster of things - be it studies, activities, emotions or anything under the sun. It is a unique experience in itself. So to experience this "experience", all you need is to have faith in yourself. Academics are past and not much can be changed about that. So the ultimate focus should be on preparation for the entrance exams like CAT and dedication to learn and explore new aspects of life.
