I wrote the CAT exam with the same dream that most of the aspirants have, to make it to the mighty IIMs. Being true to my name, like Gautam Buddha I too sat under a ‘Peepal’ tree, meditating over the CAT preparation material and writing mocks. The meditation bore me several fruits in the form of calls and converts from multiple IIMs, but I could taste only one. The decision was tricky, the decision was Trichy. One truly has to devour this fruit called IIM Trichy for real pleasure, but I will let you at least smell its aroma in the next few lines.
The students. Any institute is only as good as its students. I feel honoured to be sharing the classrooms with minds that are hungry, questioning the theories, solving problems and taking the discussions from “it depends” to “it depends on this and this can be done”. My batchmates are a motivated set of people striving for self-improvement and helping each other in reaching their goals. This culture is a fertile ground for sowing the seeds of change and watch oneself transform into something beautiful.
The Professors. The catalysts. When knowledge speaks, even the deaf listens. Such is the aura of the professors here at this institute that one rarely notices when a 1.5-hour lecture reaches its end. The practical knowledge that is brought into the classrooms along with cases from the industry and insights from the professors makes every second of the time worthwhile. The professors are also like our guides who encourage students to meet them after the lectures for discussions on the subjects taught by them or other industry related discussions. The accommodation of professors on the campus is a boon that needs no explanation.
The administration. While I do get uncomfortable at times by the high level of strictness ensured by them, in the end its their job to provide an experience that mimics the situations one might face when working in a corporate. While skills can become redundant, work can be automated, discipline and punctuality can never go out of fashion and this is what the administration seeks to build into us. Also, the administration works hard in ensuring we get all the required facilities including a professional counsellor to talk to in times of need.
The fun. Late night conversations with friends, parties, birthdays, cultural events are some of the events that frequently dot the canvas of time a student spends at IIM Trichy. Geographically Trichy is such situated that many of the tourist destinations are just a few hours away, even by road. One can travel to Pondicherry to watch the sun setting into the Bay of Bengal or can enjoy the views in Kodaikanal or can party in Bangalore. This place is a traveller’s galore.
Like most things that are great, there is no one particular reason that makes IIM Trichy unique, but an amalgamation of the reasons mentioned above. Like a perfect mix of sunshine, water and temperature provide us with the sweetest of fruits, the factors mentioned above perfectly intertwined with each other result in an MBA experience at IIM Trichy that is truly unique. I sit here and I feel at home.
