Technology is changing the world, and with the change come new profiles requiring newer skill sets. In industry 4.0, it isn’t about being a generalist or a specialist, but an amalgamation of the two. Understanding this need, IFIM Business School has introduced a new course where they train students to become, what is universally recognised as, a T-Shaped Profession. So what exactly is a T-Shaped Professional? Are you aware how you can make a T-Shaped Professional of yourself? We spoke to Dr. Atish Chattopadhyay, the Director of IFIM Bangalore, Dr. Kamalika Chakraborty, a professor at IFIM, and student Priyanka Saraswat, about the need of T-Shaped Professionals in today’s changing industry.
To go a little into what it means to be a T-Shaped Professional; the T symbolises the skill set that a person possesses. The horizontal bar of the T symbolises a broad knowledge of multiple skills, while the vertical bar symbolises an in-depth understanding of one particular skill. Why such a skill set? It’s because today’s companies aren’t competing with each other in the traditional sense. Even traditional roles are changing as digitization changes the industry landscape. Find out what it means to be a T-Shaped Professional, why the need for such a skill set, and more, in this video.

Key Takeaways:

1. The T symbolises the skill set that a person possesses. The horizontal bar of the T symbolises a broad knowledge of multiple skills, while the vertical bar symbolises an in-depth understanding of one particular skill.
2. Traditional Roles are changing. Now there isn’t just the CFO and CMO. There is also CDO, CMDO, etc.
3. Companies like Maruti and Suzuki are no longer competing with each other. They are also competing with taxi services like Ola and Uber.
4. You can be a generalist, or a specialist. But it is more desirable to be an amalgamation of both.
