The social placements for the IPM 2013-18 batch witnessed participation from 42 organisations, with 25 first time recruiters. The 115- participant strong batch picked up social internship roles in sectors such as CSR, NGOs, Social Enterprises, Academic Institutions and Social Activists. For the first time, the provision of international internships was offered to the candidates through AIESEC.
The placement season was spread over a few weeks to ensure that various functional roles offered by the organisations could be made available to the participants.
Corporate Social Responsibility
CSR emerged as the most preferred function with 49% of the batch opting for roles from the CSR wings of leading corporates including Tech Mahindra, Reliance, HCL, Aditya Birla, HDFC, Lupin, Suzlon, Jindal Steel and JCB.
Social Enterprises
Around 5% of the participants were offered roles by esteemed social enterprises like Selco, 4th Wheel and CIGS.
Academic Institutions and Social Activists
Around 29 % students were selected as interns in social projects under renowned institutes like IIM Ahmedabad- RTE-Resource Center, Tata Institute of Social Sciences(TISS) and Azim Premji Foundation. Some students shall also be interning under social activists like Harsh Mander in Center of Equity Studies.
NGOs
Prominent NGOs from across the country provided offers to 16% of the students. Some of the prominent NGOs like Vitamin Angels, Pradan, Akshay Patra, Magic Bus, Indiahikes and Waste Warriors participated in the placement process
International Internships
2 students opted for international internships through AIESEC. The interns will be working with social organisations in a cross-cultural setting gaining a unique international exposure.
Some of the projects offered to the students were:
TISS (Prayas): Working with the under trial prisoners and women rescued from commercial sexual exploitation towards their rehabilitation
Pradan: Living and working with women’s collectives in some of the poorest areas in India on development issues specific to the community (water, governance, livelihood and health) along with Pradan professionals based there.
Akshaya Patra: Pioneering school meal program to facilitate the education of underprivileged children in India.
Tech Mahindra: promoting education, including special education and employment enhancing vocation skills, especially among children, women, elderly, and the differently-abled; and livelihood enhancement projects.
CIGS: Digital-kendra is a social venture aimed at creating livelihood in rural locations by providing a set of services aimed to fulfil the needs of the local citizens. With the ‘brick and click’ model these centres are expected to offer variety of banking, financial, insurance and other digital services through technology enabled platform like mobile phones or tablets.
JCB: Enhancing quality of education with government schools and vocational skill training to communities in the hinterland of the JCB factories.
Jindal steel: Save the Girl Child – Interns will interact with Girls action Groups (GAG) and identify health needs of adolescents in the given field. Interns will engage themselves with the SHGs and give a detailed report on how best they can strengthen the SHGs.
RTERC IIM Ahmedabad: To comprehensively understand the legal and policy framework of the Right to Education Act, 2009. To study the on-ground implementation of the provisions of the RTE Act.
Aditya Birla: Skill development / vocational training through Aditya Birla Technology Park for integrated training programme and VT centres at most of our plants in collaboration with ITIs.
Center Of Equity Studies (Harsh Mander): To understand social security/ social protection from the perspective of exclusion , To understand agricultural land distribution, land reforms from the perspective of exclusion , To map incidences of communal violence across India since last 4 decades.
