Sleepless nights, countless cups of coffee and never-ending assignments are a part of the everyday life of all MBA participants. This necessitates having sports and other activities in the students’ schedule to maintain fitness and manage stress. SportsCom, the official Sports Committee of SPJIMR, has been envisioned to serve this purpose.
As SportsCom, our most important functions are:-
- Raising the interest level of students in sports and inculcating a fitness culture among them
- Facilitating inter-programme bonding by organising events open for participation for all programmes
- Providing a platform for students to practice the sports they are passionate about
- Conducting trials and selecting the teams which would represent SPJIMR in different sports in inter-college sports festivals
- Championing the cause of holding SPRINT, a national-level Sports Festival, which prides itself in hosting the maximum number of participants among all B-School Sports Festivals in India
- Increasing female participation and faculty participation in sports
Taking the onus of breaking ice and building camaraderie in the batch, SportsCom organised an intense Tug of War event in the first month of participants getting into the campus. This was the first event held by any committee in college. With participation from 200 PGDM and 20 GMP participants, the event served to build up the energy levels of the students and acted as a perfect Launchpad in bringing a sense of togetherness in the batch.
Female participation has been at the core of every event that we hold, which was reinforced in the tug of war event where every team was supposed to have minimum 3 and maximum 4 female members. The Table tennis event that was organised subsequently, too had girls’ singles and mixed doubles events, which saw encouraging participation from the students.
To raise awareness about sports in general and Olympics in particular, screening of the badminton finals between PV Sindhu and Carolina Marin was hosted in the college which was widely appreciated. The next important task for SportsCom was to conduct trials for SPJIMR sports teams which would represent the college at different sports festivals. This was done successfully a week before the first B-School Sports Festival - Josh by NITIE. The trials and practice bore fruit and SPJIMR emerged as the winner in Basketball (boys), Basketball (girls) and Carrom events.
For all the cricket enthusiasts in the institute, SPJIMR Premier League (SPL) is organised every year to bring together a week full of cricketing madness. Based on the lines of Indian Premier League, SPL was organised this year in November and included owner selection followed by the auctions, before the actual play. 8 teams were formed, including 5 from PGDM, 2 from PGPM and 1 from GMP program. The event was a roaring success, with some participants describing it as their best week in the institute so far.
SPJIMR hosts the French foreign exchange students from ESCP Business School every year, who play an exhibition match with SPJIMR football team. SportsCom is the committee which organises and manages the event. Looking at the enthusiasm of students for football in the college, SportsCom is planning to introduce SPJIMR Football League (SFL), in lines of SPL, in mid-December this year.
We are committed to making the campus fitter, not just for the students, but for the faculty and administrative staff as well. To accomplish this, we plan to hold Sports Day for faculty and administrative staff in mid- December and Sports Day for the students of Class 7th-12th enrolled in Abhyudaya programme in mid-January. With all the exciting sporting events that happen around the year in SPJIMR, we are sure that you will enjoy your time here.
