The Story Of How I Entered The Hallowed Gates Of IIM Shillong

The story of how I entered the hallowed gates of IIM Shillong started long back in 2014. Way before I had any idea of what I wanted to do with my career, I had come to Shillong for a family trip and I had passed by IIM Shillong looking at the beautiful campus from outside and thinking what it would feel like to study somewhere so beautiful. The locals here at Shillong, talk about the campus with reverence and respect and that gave me the feeling that the institute played an important role in the community here. But just how significant and important it was, I was yet to realize.  Regardless, IIM Shillong and its beautiful campus had a lasting impression on my mind.

When I got the call for an interview, I was elated. I started reading up more about IIM Shillong and came to know about its various achievements both in academics as well as in the social field. IIM Shillong has been consistently performing well and achieving great heights in corporate competitions. IIM Shillong has been winning Yes Bank Transformation Series consecutively for the past two years. IIM Shillong has been the national champion of Tata Steel-a-thon this year. Therefore, I wanted to give my best and prepared likewise.

My interview mostly revolved around my academics and general knowledge but when I mentioned that I had interned at a firm which exported handmade goods made out of recycled products, the discussion moved towards sustainability and the importance of adopting sustainable practices in today’s world. From that point onwards, the interview felt more like a discussion and less like a typical b-school stress interview. I gave them my opinion on sustainability and also talked about some ideas that could be put into implementation for future. I also talked about my role as a tutor at an NGO for orphaned children and that I was looking forward to joining IIM Shillong’s initiative called Nurturing Minds, which guides and teaches underprivileged local students here in Shillong.

After I received the offer letter, I started weighing my options but it didn’t take me much time to decide that it was IIM Shillong that I wanted to join finally. IIM Shillong provided the perfect blend of a competitive business environment as well as teaching students how to be socially responsible and environmentally conscious. The vision of IIM Shillong is perfectly aligned with my ideology in life. This coupled with the mesmerizing campus situated right in the middle of clouds made coming to IIM Shillong a very obvious decision for me.
