Have you ever dreamed of studying at one of the most prestigious management institutes in India? What if we told you that you could spend a week at the IIM-A campus during winters, attending interactive sessions, participating in fun activities, and meeting some of the brightest minds in the industry? Sounds too good to be true, right? But it isn't!
I recently had the privilege of attending the Winter School organized by RTERC at IIM Ahmedabad, and I can safely say that it was one of the best experiences of my life. The winter school was focused on public policy, and it included a range of sessions, field visits, and exciting activities spread over four days. But that's not all! The winter school is open to anyone interested in the topic, regardless of their background or prior experience.
You don't need a top-notch resume or a high GPA to get selected; all you need to do is complete a project work, which involves some groundwork, talking to people, and preparing a report. This makes it a fantastic opportunity for students who are struggling to get internships at big firms or those looking for unique ways to enhance their learning.
Bonus: Because few people are aware of it, only about 100 people apply, with 40 of them being shortlisted.
Here are some of the highlights of my experience at the winter school:
The Application Process: An extended Google Form in rolled out which has questions regarding personal details, some basic HR questions, and most important - The Project Work.
In my case, we had to talk to three people:
1) who dropped studies before the 8th standard
2) who dropped out of school after high school
3) who didn't get into college, and prepare a report about it.
The application forms for the winter school are usually out in October (start following RTERC, IIM-A on LinkedIn for updates), and the results are announced in November, and winter school begins in the last week of November or the first week of December. So, if you're shortlisted, you'll have sufficient time to book your flights. Accommodations are in the IIM- A campus and charges there are minimal, ranging from 3K to 5K, and participants are free to use the canteen, library, or anything else on campus during their stay.
Interacting with Diverse Minds: The winter school was a melting pot of diverse people, ranging from CA's, Doctors, Engineers, and Journalism students to Fine Arts and Law students. We had the opportunity to interact with activists, professors from on or off-campus, and even bureaucrats during the sessions. This aspect was fantastic as it allowed us to understand different perspectives and gave us an insight into how people from different backgrounds approach public policy issues.
The Learning Experience: One of the best things about winter school was the opportunity to witness how classes at IIM-A work. We saw first-hand how students complete their work in tight deadlines and carry on with their side hobbies, be it participating in a case competition or preparing for some sports inter-IIM event. We also got a glimpse of how students’ study in the library, who eventually earn the highest packages. The winter school provided us with a perfect experience of what it takes to be a student at IIM-A.
Exploring Ahmedabad: The winter school also provided us with ample free time to explore the city of Ahmedabad. We had the chance to visit historical places like the Sabarmati Ashram, Adalaj Stepwell, and the Sidi Saiyyed Mosque. We also tried out the local street food and shopped at the bustling bazaars, which was an enjoyable experience in itself.
Completing the Project Work: After the winter school ends, participants are given 14 days to complete a project on a topic of their choice. We could request an extension in case of exams or any other emergency. Upon completion, all participants receive a certificate, and the top three get special mentions in their letters.
In conclusion, the winter school organized by RTERC at IIM-Ahmedabad was a unique and enriching experience that I would recommend to anyone interested in public policy. The opportunity to interact with diverse minds, witness the learning experience at IIM-A, explore Ahmedabad, and complete a project work all make it unforgettable.
