SOP plays a crucial part in your process. You need to provide your story, and your plan for the future in just 1000 characters. Dos-
  1. Focus on presenting yourself in a relevant manner that connects to your purpose (How MBA as well as the institute fits in your plan).
  2. Whenever you highlight any strength/skill of yours, try attaching a relevant reason/source for the same (how you attained it).
  3. Try to make it interesting and engaging.
  4. Write something about the institute that relates/resonates with you. Can be something that would help you in attaining your future goal.
  5. SOPs can/will be cross-questioned as well later in the interviews, so be thorough with it and write honestly.
Don’ts-
  1. Stick to a particular topic/point for long (Be concise as per the word limit).
  2. Lie/Boast of some skill you don’t possess (This can be a deal breaker if cross-questioned).
  3. Being general with your future plans (try to be a little specific with your goals, that separates you from the rest, and proposes your sense of maturity & clarity to the reader)

The SOP is the one which gives an introduction of yourself before you reach to the panel for the interview, thus it plays an important part as it reflects your true image. According to me, following is the information which should be communicated through the SOP to increase its relevance for your admission-
  1. Answer and justify your decision of pursuing an MBA
  2. Explain what brings you to this institution FMS
  3. Elaborate a little regarding your short term and long-term goals and how it aligns with your vision
  4. Create a general storyline explaining your journey, your past education, experience, etc.
Now the challenge is “HOW TO DO IT IN 1000 CHARACTERS” Focus on the following few requisites-
  1. The language must be extremely clear and concise.
  2. Be as original as you can, do not just copy someone else’s, your uniqueness matters.
  3. Initially gather all your thoughts and write it all down, then comes the caveat of the word limit which will then be the result of the few filtering rounds for the final SOP.
  4. Get your SOP reviewed by people around before final submission.
Don’t try to fake it, the panelists are very experienced academicians, be confident of who you are, ensure your words in the SOP speaks about the most of you.

Discussion on SOP is an essential part of the interview process at FMS.This is your chance to communicate to the panel

1. About yourself
2. Why MBA?

An ideal SOP should act like a string that connects your past experiences, present and future aspirations, and should explain how an MBA would support this connection.Following are some pointers that should be kept in mind while drafting the SOP.

1. Be concise and structured. Use short sentences. The SOP can be segmented into 3-4 short paragraphs each covering a single unique theme, for ease of structuring.
2. Brief coverage of the important life milestones( personal/academic/work ex related) that are connected with your decision to pursue MBA.
3. Think about 1-2 traits/values that are most fundamental to you and meaningfully work that into the SOP.
4. Alternatively, you could briefly mention key learnings from student/work life
5. Talk about your future aspirations, do try to align it with some domain of management, like finance/marketing etc., which you have a penchant for/ prior work-ex in.
6. Overall tone of the SOP should reflect humility, hunger to learn, and the aspiration to work towards a larger goal in life.

The SOP is an exercise in effective expression. A well written SOP can be the foundation and guiding light, helping you communicate precisely with consistency.

A statement of purpose (SOP) for the Faculty of Management Studies is like any other SOP that should explain your interest in pursuing a graduate program in management, your career goals, and how the program aligns with those goals. However, since there is a word limit of 1000 characters, the goal should be to touch upon all the important aspects in as few words as possible. Here is a general outline of what your SOP might include: It is important to be clear, concise, and to the point. Do not include any irrelevant information. Another important tip is to portray the above pointers like a coherent story. The SOP makes up a segment in the interview process of FMS so, make sure that you only mention things that you can actually talk about at length with the interviewers. Be honest and have faith in your story. Best of luck!
