Yale School of Management of the Ivy League Yale University is one of the world's top-15 business schools, and is counted amongst the most elite management institutes every year. In 2020, to the joy of international MBA aspirants, Yale SOM has announced a STEM-certified concentration for its two year full-time MBA program! This means that now, non-American Yale MBA graduates can extend their stay in the US to up to 36 months. Here's what you need to know about this new STEM-certified concentration.
What Is STEM OPT Extension?
STEM OPT extension is a 24 month period of temporary training in an approved STEM field. This directly relates to an F-1 student’s program of study. OPT stands for Optional Practical Training, which is offered to students who have completed their degree and wish to extend their training. Students who have finished their program of study have the option to select an OPT post-completion of their program. Students that are a part of the initial period of a regular post-completion OPT (about 12 months) are eligible to apply for a STEM OPT.

Yale School of Management's STEM-Certified Concentration - Official Announcement
Yale recently announced on their website that three of their degree programs have now gotten the STEM OPT designation. This means that students who are enrolled in these degree programs at Yale SOM have the opportunity to qualify for an additional STEM OPT. For MBA and MAM (Masters of Advanced Management) students to be eligible for the STEM OPT, they must first complete a concentration in Management Science. This concentration will draw on the Yale SOM faculty’s broad expertise in applying quantitative methods to challenges in business and management. Students will qualify for the concentration by completing a minimum number of credits in eligible courses, such as Data Analysis and Causal Inference, Speculation and Hedging in Financial Markets, and Big Data and Customer Analytics.
Currently enrolled students (Class of 2020 and 2021) who complete the required coursework will be eligible for this STEM OPT. Incoming students too can apply for the same in their final year.
