Making myself great again!
I have done my schooling from Marathi medium. In 11th std I got fairly good in writing skills. As I entered in my undergrad in Vellore institute of technology, I had a realization that I need to get my English-speaking skills honed. As VIT has students from all over India, English was a default language there. I like to make people smile and laugh. It frustrated me that I cannot convey my humor to my peers. So I took a decision to get my English fluency up to the par. The first thing I did was I started thinking in English. I watched a ton of English movies and TV shows to notice how the native English speakers frame the sentences. I also started speaking in English whenever and wherever possible. I got better fairly quickly and could catch up to my peers in about six months. My biggest learning was to get better at something I need to stop pondering about what I can do and just start taking action instead. Pondering over improving did not give me success at all, taking action did.
One day during this semester, I had an opportunity to speak in English. I was hesitant for a second. I started talking nonetheless. Words were flowing out of my mouth very easily. I was able to convey my thoughts clearly during the presentation. I gained massive confidence that day, I felt a strong sense of achievement. I celebrated by getting extra whipped cream on my coffee.
