Tell us about a time when you messed up, and what you learnt from the experience?
For my startup, I had convinced two of my best friends to quit their job and join me as partners. We wanted to open a chain of cafes. They did quit and joined the company. For a start, after a lot of struggle, we opened a cafe at MNNIT Allahabad but we were not very successful in running it. I think I messed up here. Maybe the idea or the execution was not enough. Nevertheless, everyone had to suffer. What I learned from this experience is that from far things seem simple and easy. You only get to know the reality of a domain or anything in life, when you actually get into it or start doing it.
Tell us something about yourself that others may be surprised to know about you.
I am not scared of risking and following unconventional paths. In fact, it gives me a thrill. Something I still don't I did is and still surprises me is that I was able to travel solo for one month on two different occasions.
What have been your two biggest successes in life? What did you learn from them?
The definition of success for every individual is different. For me, the two biggest successes are -1. Opening a cafe in my alma mater (MNNIT Allahabad) - I may have not been able to run it in the best possible way. But to get it opened with all the effort and struggle was a dream come true for me.2. Volunteering with a backpacking hostel - I consider it a success because, with the kind of life we are expected to live, it is almost impossible to travel solo and carefree for two months. It was again a dream. So basically, success for me is fulfilling my dreams, not what society wants me to fulfil.
Professionally, what is your ideal image of yourself five years from now? Where do you see yourself?
Five years from now, I see myself as a senior product manager. I see myself building great products for a company that hopefully has a positive impact on society.
What is the one skill or characteristic you possess that you are most proud of, and why?
Patience. I am really proud of the fact that I am effortlessly patient in life. I always believe in putting consistent efforts and patiently waiting for the reward, never really panicking about things. It helps me remain calm in difficult situations. I also reap rewards that impatient people can't even imagine getting.
In your opinion, what skills or qualities does a successful manager possess?
A successful manager has to be a good listener along with being a great leader.
Tell us about an ethical dilemma that you may have faced, and how you resolved it.
When I was thinking of quitting my job to start my own company, my parents were not really in favour of it. For them, leaving a good job was a foolish decision. They did not want me to quit. On the other hand, I really wanted to leave my job and start. I was in a dilemma, where If I quit I'll be disappointing my parents and hurting them and if I didn't I will be killing my dreams. Ultimately, I chose my dreams over hurting them because I felt, If I get successful they will be happy for me. But if I didn't try I'll always have some regret.
If you were the CEO of any company of your choosing, which company would you choose and what would your first action be as CEO?
I'll be the CEO of Apple because I am highly inspired by Steve Jobs and his unconventional ideas. My first action as a CEO would be requesting all the employees to read the biography of steve jobs as I would want them to understand his vision of why he created the company and the way his mind worked. It will help both the employees and the company.
