A Hidden Gem - DMS IIT Delhi - Siddharth Chaturvedi, Class of 2020

It’s that time of the year again when we start getting the interview calls from our dream B-schools. I was in the same shoes last year and had final converts from some good colleges like MDI Gurgaon, IIM Trichy/Rohtak/Udaipur and DMS, IIT Delhi. Choosing the best among them based on my expectations and credentials was a very difficult choice. Before going further, let me begin by describing my background before joining MBA.

I was a typical GEM candidate with about 3.5 years of work experience in IT product companies and had a B. Tech degree from a decent college. My CAT score was above 98 percentile with all sectionals above 94 percentile. My expectations from an MBA program were very similar to many of us - to get a lot of opportunities, to excel in the corporate space and lead big teams. Also, I wanted to be associated with a world-renowned alma mater which would give my skills certain credibility.

Like most engineers who like the technical field, I wanted to use my technical skills and knowledge and combine it with management education to get into top techno-managerial roles. After a lot of research, I chose IIT Delhi and DMS hasn’t disappointed.

The top-notch faculty, along with a lot of flexibility to learn different areas gives you the freedom to explore yourself. The major factors which made me choose DMS, IIT Delhi among the choices I had were the world-renowned IIT Delhi brand, the ROI factor, substantial location advantage, excellent opportunities in technology-related managerial roles, as well as the endless opportunities which the IIT ecosystem provides us. I have delved into each of these factors below.

IIT Delhi, now also being an institute of eminence, is among the best brands with which you would like to be associated within our country as well as abroad. IIT Delhi brand has crossed boundaries and has immense international recognition. Thus, being an alumnus of IIT Delhi separates you from the crowd at most places/companies in the world and it gives you much more credibility.

The ROI factor was also important for me while making my decision. Since we do not have very significant variations in terms of placement opportunities among the top 20 B-schools in India, the cost becomes an important consideration while getting in the program. Thus, the significantly lower fee of DMS, IIT Delhi gives it a big advantage when compared to colleges in the same league. You need not stress about paying back hefty loans just after you graduate which gives you more freedom if you want to go the entrepreneurial route.

Top leaders from various firms interact with the DMS students round the year. With so many start-ups emanating from IIT Delhi on a very regular basis, you get excellent opportunities to form teams with diverse students from various courses and take top positions in the start-ups if you are willing to go the entrepreneurial route.
