Indian Institute of Management, Rohtak (IIM- R) witnessed a very enthusiastic response from the students and the general public to a blood donation camp organised here in association with the Red Cross Society and HDFC Bank on 8
th December 2013. The event was co-ordinated by the Social Development Cell of IIM-R.
The Director of IIM-R, Prof. P. Rameshan inaugurated the camp in the morning at 9.30. He noted in his inaugural address that against a demand of 4 crore units of blood in India, the supply was limited to only 40 lakh, which made blood donation very important.
The first donors were the students from IIM-R themselves. The event sent a strong humanitarian message across the local community, and students from various institutions in Maharshi Dayanand University Campus and residents of Rohtak were also inspired to take part in the donation making it a success. The proud donors were recognised by the certificates distributed by HDFC Bank and other by Red Cross/Haryana State Blood Transfusion Council. The camp concluded by 4.00 in the evening. A total of 125 people played their role in saving precious lives by donating blood at the camp.
The camp was the latest in the line of social responsibility programmes initiated by IIM-R. The institute also has other such initiatives, including ‘Swabhav’ for the education of the daughters of selected auto drivers of Rohtak. There is also an annual mini-Marathon conducted by the institute, ‘Run for the Girl Child’, promoting equality of genders in the state of Haryana which has an extremely skewed sex ratio and associated gender discrimination.
The event reinforced the commitment of IIM-R to undertake social causes and champion them despite busy schedules and limited time, which reflects the mission statement of the institute which calls for its students to embody “unparalleled social commitment”.
