Mental health is often the most neglected when we are put to a grind. For Gayathri, it became too much to handle during her undergraduate years. Studying away from family, the pressure of acclimatizing in new surroundings and proving to others that her decision of not pursuing engineering to go for mathematics was the right one, took a toll on her mental health. To an extent that one day she decided to end her own life! In this video from the REAL STEEL series, sponsored by Tata Steel, we have Gayathri Shankar from XLRI Jamshedpur, taking us through the ups and downs of her life.
Gayathri developed her interest in mathematics from an early age and wanted to pursue the same over engineering. Taking a step forward she finally joined Chennai Mathematical Institute for her B.Sc. in Mathematics. But, things didn't quite turn out to be on her favor at CMI. Gayathri gradually fell into the pit of depression and her deteriorating mental health made things worse. Instead of asking for help, she started pushing people away. Things deteriorated to a point where she tried ending her life. But life had other plans for her. Succumbing to the mounting pressure due to deteriorating mental health was averted by her one good decision. To seek help! In this video, Gayathri mentions how it is very important to keep re-assessing your mental health and take professional counseling whenever needed. The life B-school students lead, with mounting academic pressure and constant competition, it becomes very important to pause for a moment and ruminate, which Gayathri at her XLRI journey now follows to the tee. Tata Steel salutes the fighter that Gayathri is, who is on her way to make a mark for herself despite the hiccups.
