With CAT done and dusted, most MBA aspirants will now be setting their sights on the next target - IIFT. However, the general knowledge section on the IIFT entrance exam becomes an Achilles’ Heel for almost every aspirant because of its unpredictability, and the cut-off. When you look at the GK section objectively though, you realize that it isn’t as big a terror as it seems. With the right preparation and exam strategy, you can easily clear the cut-off and even get those extra marks to give you the edge. The cut-off mark has so far always been in single digits, hovering somewhere around 5 marks. We analyzed the previous year IIFT papers to understand what kind of questions and topics to expect this year. Read on to find out more!
There are 2 kinds of general knowledge questions tested in the paper - static GK, or facts that don’t change in the future, and current GK, which is based on current affairs. Given below is the breakup between the two over the years. As you can see, the current affairs-based questions have been increasing in importance over the years, and you can expect the trend to continue this year.

Preparing for the static GK segment is slightly more difficult, as it involves reading across sources on the internet as well as general knowledge books such as Manorama and Arihant. IIFT also tests candidates on their knowledge of trade bodies and events so knowledge of these will be beneficial.
The current GK questions are relatively easier to answer since they are based on ongoing events around the world. If you read the newspaper regularly or at least stay updated on the internet, you won’t face much issue with these.
Given below are some GK topics you should quickly brush up on in the upcoming week in order to be battle-ready on D-Day.
- Common regional festivals of India
- Headquarters, logos and CEOs/chairpersons of prominent companies
- Currencies and capitals of countries around the world
- Headquarters of prominent economic and trade bodies (such as BIMSTEC, World Bank, OECD, European Central Bank)
- Dates and locations of sporting bodies such as FIFA and ICC World Cups, Summer and Winter Olympics.
- Chief Ministers and Central Cabinet Ministers with their portfolios
