And the one exam which had kept hundreds of thousands of aspirants on their toes for the past one year or so came, shook the world for 3 hours and went away in a jiffy akin to a puff of smoke. Some of the test takers are experiencing a delirious euphoria post the exam with the confidence of getting a score equal to or higher than what they had expected. Kudos for that but one should not forget that one more storm comes close on the heels of CAT every year – the Group Discussions and Personal Interviews rounds. One can say that there’s more than sufficient time to ready one’s guards against the test of GD/PIs but being aware of what’s happening around can really provide one with a clear edge over the others and assist in making informed arguments. Having a glimpse at what all has happened around the world in the past one week can act as a good start so here we go: Hello! India: a. The “Hi-Tech” city of India – Hyderabad has taken another great leap in its incessant stride towards modernity by becoming only the 8th Indian city to have metro connectivity. PM Narendra Modi flagged off the inaugural metro on November 28, 2017 on the sidelines of the Global Entrepreneurship Summit going on in the city. b. In this era of the prevalence of an incredible level of intolerance in India, Supreme Court has rightly suggested the incumbent government to bring about a legislation to fix responsibility and incriminate those found causing the loss of life or property in the name of protests. c. Citing reasons like adjusting to the GST regime, limited fiscal support and slow corporate deleveraging, DBS Bank has lowered its growth outlook of India from 6.8% to 6.6% in the FY 2018-19. Let’s go global: a. Germany has been reeling since it has adopted a liberal immigrant policy. Recently, a pro-refugee mayor was stabbed in the neck for uncertain reasons and also, 10 German immigrants, on an average, get attacked on a daily basis in the country. It’s a long road to travel for Angela Merkel as far as the implementation of her pro-immigrant policies is concerned. b. The residents of Bali and the thousands of its tourists have been quarantined from the rest of the world due to an unforeseen ash eruption from Mount Agung which has caused the closure of Bali’s international airport for more than 2 days now. Volcanologists also fear its complete eruption anytime in the coming seven days. c. Oil prices have surged back to the 2015 levels in the US after an unexpected and continued growth of demand owing to an outperforming global economy. The prices are back to the $60 a barrel level indicating a reduction of the supply glut which has been there for the past few years. From the world of marketing: a. Brands and the outdoor advertising agencies like Times OOH have been prompt in leveraging the upward looking traffic trend of two of Tamil Nadu’s high-potential airports like Coimbatore and Trichy by using spaces efficiently to communicate their product portfolios to the potential customers. b. IPG Mediabrands’ Initiative has won the contract for being the global media agency of the immensely loved and respected toy brand Lego owing to the strengths of Initiative such as a digital-first approach, global reach and strong local insights. A peek into the Politics: a. The Irish Deputy Prime Minister Frances Fitzgerald has resigned after facing corruption charges. This will act as a breather for the coalition government led by Leo Varadkar to avert the proposal of a no-confidence vote and hence fresh general elections right before Christmas. b. A Polish euro MP charged with scrutinising the Brexit negotiations has stirred the officials of both EU and UK by saying that there are still permutations & combinations possible which can lead to UK staying as an integral part of the European Union. This is it for this week. Happy Reading!
