The UPL’IIFT’ Series- by the Media Committee, Indian Institute of Foreign Trade, in collaboration with InsideIIM is an initiative to help aspirants understand and prepare for the IIFT Entrance Exam with strategies adopted by some of the top performers from the college.
When did you start your preparation for the IIFT exam and can you walk us through your preparation strategy?
I started my preparation for MBA Entrance in June 2019. I was a working professional so time management was very crucial for me.
I was always comfortable with quants but DILR & VARC were not my forte. To augment my preparation for these sections, I would give regular sectional tests coupled with readings and solving puzzles regularly. Three months prior to the exams, I made it a habit of solving 5 DILR 3 RCs and 20 Quants questions daily. According to me, consistency is the most important factor.
Giving mocks and analysing them is very important. It helps us analyse our strengths and weakness and helps develop a roadmap of how to go about the exam so as to maximise our score. Additionally, mock tests give you the added advantage of trying out various strategies and selecting the one’s that work.

What were the resources that you went through while preparing for your Interview?
In the first year of my preparation I enrolled in TIME. Apart from that, I also referred to Arun Sharma’s material for Quants and RCs.
For VARC, reading newspapers and novels helps a lot. Reading newspapers regularly would also help in Interview preparation and GK section of IIFT.
For DILR, solving previous years questions should be sufficient.
For interviews, I prepared from the reading material given by the coaching centres. Reading newspaper on a daily basis helps a lot. I also used to read the interview transcript of the best performers from the previous batches. This helped me develop a framework on how to answer basic questions. One should be well versed with their graduation subjects along with the current affairs.

Elaborate on your approach while giving mocks. How do you think the mock tests helped you during your preparation?
Mock Tests are one of the most important aspects for any examination. I started giving mocks 3-4 months prior to the final exam. Proctored Mocks in exam simulated conditions were useful for me.
Also a good amount of time should be spent on analysing those mocks. The sole purpose is to minimise the silly mistakes and errors we made in the mocks and understand the questions that we could have attempted.
As for weak sections, I would recommend giving sectional papers regularly and taking up topic wise tests which are being provided by various coaching institutes.

Do you have any final tips for aspirants?
- Consistency is the key to the success. Practising daily helps a lot. I would suggest everyone to devote some time to practise daily irrespective of a busy schedule.
- At the end of the day, it is just an exam. Treat it like that only. Your life doesn’t depend upon it
- Mock is very important. Analyse it well and don’t get discouraged due to low mock scores.
- Enjoy your preparation.
