The IIM Bangalore Selection Criteria 2018 have been released on the institute's official website.
Highlights of the selection criteria are -
- A total of 40% of weightage is given to the CAT 2018 score, the breakup of which is -
a) Verbal & Reading Comprehension (VARC) - 14 points
b) Data Interpretation & Logical Reasoning (DILR) - 16 points
c) Quantitative Aptitude (QA) - 10 points
- 2% weightage is given to Gender Diversity for Phase 1 of the selection process, while there are no marks for academic diversity in any Phase.
- 20% of the weightage is given to Class 10th and Graduation marks each, while 8% of the total weightage is for work experience.
"IIMB has found over the years that students who perform well academically in the PGP are typically those who have a consistently good academic record during their secondary school, higher secondary school and graduation level, besides exhibiting sufficiently high aptitude as measured by the CAT.
Therefore IIMB uses multiple parameters, namely academic performance in 10th & 12th grades, graduation programs as well as candidates' section wise scores in CAT to judge the suitability of candidates for the PGP. Relevant work experience, if any, is also given weight in the selection. Evaluation by multiple criteria is also consistent with empirical research on recruitment and selection that shows greater efficacy of recruitment processes that use multiple criteria." - IIM Bangalore

Point to be observed -
- The quality of work experience score will be evaluated on a 5 point scale (0.25 - 0.5 - 1 - 1.5 - 2) by each member of the panel during the interviews. The average quality of work experience score will be multiplied by the pre-PI work experience score and accordingly, the work/professional experience component score used in Phase 1 will be revised to arrive at a weighted work experience score.
- The performance of the candidate in the Writing Ability Test will be scored in terms of content and style of writing.
- All candidates will be required to provide two confidential reference letters from employers or teachers.
The final offers of admission to candidates in each category will be made strictly on the basis of the Final Aggregate Score.
The Verdict -
There have been no changes in the selection criteria since last year for IIM Bangalore, Ahmedabad and Calcutta, indicating that the holy trinity has gotten the formula right, at least for now.
For IIM Bangalore, one of the most difficult IIMs to get admission into, candidates need to have a stellar academic background and significant work experience to make it to the interview rounds of IIM-B. Non-engineers do not have an advantage in the entire selection process - which could also explain why almost 90% of the Class of 2020 at IIM Bangalore consists of Engineers.
However, this does level the playing ground for aspirants from all academic backgrounds.
According to the
InsideIIM Gender Diversity Report, IIM Bangalore has 28% women in the current batch, far behind IIM Trichy (50%), IIM Rohtak (49%), IIM Indore (37%) etc. This year, again, female candidates have 2 extra points, which can help improve this figure in the future.
