IIM Shillong - A Typical Day

It's 5:45am. The alarm goes off. You peek out of your window and witness the heartwarming drizzle. It has been one year, yet the weather always finds a way to mesmerize you. It's 6:30 and the fitness freaks are up and ready. A former national Tennis player, professional Cyclist, Marathon runner and a Badminton aficionado, all gather for the morning run. It's GAME ON.

A little over two hours of on-court rigorous training session, the contingent is back in their dorms. With a regulated breakfast, we are pumped up for the day’s challenge.

Our first class is International marketing. “how do you create value for your customer?” asks the professor. It was time to put ourselves in the shoes of the manufacturer. After numerous ideas came up, the facilitator gives a statement- “don’t understand your customer. Understand the job.” With a case to solve, the class gets dismissed

Enter professor for investment banking. We are trying to understand whether Facebook’s IPO price was over or undervalued. After numerous calculations from analysis of balance sheet, the result surprised us. Another case is given as pre-read for next class.

We have a break. The mess is serving Biryani to our excitement. Its Croatia vs England face off tonight. The mess buzzed with football fanatics discussing intricacies of the game.

Half hour post lunch, various committees held meetings on the future course of action (for inter IIM events). The meeting lasts about for 45 min. The committee disperses with an actional plan for the next two weeks

Just as the business minds are getting comfortable, rumor comes in that there might be surprise test for portfolio analysis. With HDFC stock taking hit, this was the second most shocking news. The batch runs to library to use Bloomberg terminal. Calculating alpha and beta of selected stock, we try to analyze the weights which will give us the maximum return.

The test rumor turns out to be untrue. The class goes smoothly as usual

It’s 6 pm. With two hours for dinner, the DOTA lovers sense the window of opportunity. With LAN set, players on mark, its game time.

It has been an exhausting day. Now starts the night. With two birthdays mails, the batch is gearing up for a major celebration. The campus comes to life and you can feel the energy flowing.

It's 1am. Corporate banking assignment is due at 6am. There are two cases as pre-reads for Investment banking and Industrial marketing. Its time to burn the midnight oil. The future managers pull another all-nighter.

It's 5:45am again. GAME ON!

Which ABG company would you want to work for and why?

I would like to work for Aditya Birla Capital. I have always been fascinated by wealth management, how money market works and how companies are financed. Financial consultant affects an economy both at the macro and micro level, which is translated to an increased sense of responsibility and job satisfaction. Also, the smorgasbord of opportunities available makes this sector even more coveted.  ABG capital will give me a perfect platform to hone my skills in financial consultancy
