If you think Human Resource Management is a career for the ‘nice’ people, you’re somewhat wrong and if you think that HR Management just involves hiring and engaging employees, you’re way off the charts! HR Management has been what makes or breaks great organizations. Most of the companies that had underplayed this function found themselves in an uncomfortable situation when nations went under lockdowns overnight. Trade froze, services disrupted, cash flow stopped; but somehow the show had to go on, amid the acceleration of digitization, employee well-being concerns & remote model of work. This was a moment of reckoning for the HR Management domain & this was not taught in any b-school!
Data Analytics is no longer just a good-to-have business capability. It has become the strategic differentiator & most businesses are being restructured around it. For example, daily, Spotify users create 600 GBs of data that the company uses to perfect its algorithms and machines to improve customer experiences and extrapolate insights. This means that no matter which domain you are in, as a management professional, you got to sit up and take notice of Data Analytics.
As per LinkedIn’s 2022 Job report for India, 82% of India’s workforce is preparing to switch jobs in this very year and 45% of them are confident about their next job roles. Coming in the aftermath of a pandemic-induced long stagnation, this #GreatResignation or #GreatReshuffle- call what you may- is good news, as it finally allows businesses to bring in fresh problem-solvers and professionals with people skills. This also brings up an important question - what are the key skills that these organizations will be looking for in these candidates? If you belong to this set of 82%, you are probably asking this same question to yourself as well.
If you are looking to upskill yourself as an HR professional, you should consider acquiring the skills of a data analyst. Sounds weird? Actually, it isn’t. The arrival of Big Data and Analytics during the 2008 financial crisis proved to be a game-changer for various business functions as it helped them to measure and monitor all the work they do and thus understand how efficient and effective they are. While business functions like Marketing and Operations have been quick to embrace the benefits of Analytics, HR has been a relatively late entrant.
