With its presence in diverse sectors like telecom, financial services, metals, cement, chemicals, fertilisers, the Aditya Birla Group has touched and improved millions of lives. All this has been possible because of their belief in their people, their thoughts and their experiences. Under the guidance of Mr. Kumar Mangalam Birla, the group has evolved from being a family-owned business to becoming one of the best-run and professionally-managed groups in the world. It has emerged to be a global leader in the sectors in which the group operates.
The Aditya Birla Group also undertakes various philanthropic initiatives with the objective of uplifting, improving lives of the marginalised and weaker sections of the society, thereby inspiring many.
The group has touched every Indians life and I am no different. Being shy and introvert, moving away from home felt like a nightmare. Adjusting to hostel life whilst living with strangers made me severely homesick and got the better of me. As our college was on the outskirts of Pune, reception issues made calling home a task for most , but I was lucky. It was only Idea cellular network that worked well in the campus and this was the only respite for me. Being able to get in touch with my family whenever I felt lonely made me feel like they were close to me. This tremendously eased the process of adjusting to my new life. It made sure that distance couldn’t do us apart. All the more, people around me who were struggling , looking for telephone booths here and there, took no time in switching to Idea upon realising the benefits it provided. As an active customer I felt proud of being associated with the brand. Getting an Idea definitely changed my life for the better. The “Big” made distances disappear.
Be it gifting on festivals, memorable events or first days at work, I know that stores like Pantaloons have got me covered. The quality and comfort provided by trustworthy brands like Louis Phillipe and Allen Solly make customers like me come back, asking for more. I as a customer am rest assured that “Big” is all about great style. Undeniably, it is these factors that have earned Aditya Birla Fashion and Retail the top spot in the market. Quite often I don’t even realize how I have been associating with, and utilising products from the Birla group as they are so intertwined in my daily life. These are just a few of many instances where products and services from the Birla Group have ensured I am a happy, fulfilled customer. This is what Makes the Aditya Birla Group “Big” in my life.
‘How I overcame challenges to achieve my ambitions in life so far’
A soldier’s daughter, I grew up on the move, attending nine schools in twelve years of my formal education.
Constant travel meant constant adaptation. I had to work harder to achieve simple things that most kids my age took for granted. Some of the schools were converted army barracks. Fewer resources meant I had to maximize my learning from the world around me.
This gave me a rare opportunity to explore cultures not only across India but also across Africa where my father was on deputation. I was fortunate to interact with people from diverse walks of life and diverse geographies. Interactions of this nature in my formative years helped broaden my perspective and made me a grounded individual.
Born and brought up amongst intellectual and academically proficient people, it was natural that I was academically inclined from the very beginning. With above average scores throughout school and a 90 above percentile in class 12th I assumed that getting a college of my choice would be a piece of cake.
With this confidence, I started applying to some of the best undergrad schools within the country with a belief that I would definitely get through. I was in for a rude shock when I realised that despite having a fairly decent percentage I couldn’t get my dream school because of the infamous reservation system prevalent in our country. I almost felt robbed and drew a blank as to what my Plan B should be. After a lot of brainstorming, I finally opted for what every science student does – engineering.
As I boarded the plane to my new destination, I was full of doubts. I just hoped that this decision wouldn’t ruin my life
Contrary to my expectations, engineering didn’t just allow me to enhance my problem solving and analytical skills, but also provided numerous opportunities to hone my social skills. In the four years I spent there, I had extremely enriching and exciting experiences. Being a part of the student council and the college choreography team allowed me to enhance my management and leadership skills, and taught me the importance of team work. Working with a college start-up allowed me to hone my relationship building and communication skills. Once an introvert and shy person, now I was a confident young lady ready to take on the world. I consider my decision about choosing my undergraduate school the best mistake of my life because it has played vital role in shaping my career. Experiences of my formative years also helped me to effortlessly slide into my first job of an analyst. Having worked with teams before, I could forge strong bonds and work well with my team.
Six years later through all the choices, chances and experiences, I am finally on the brink of a major transformation. Doing my MBA will act as the bridge between where I am and where I want to be.
Being a part of NMIMS is the most apt means for me to achieve my goals. Not only will I gain an excellent management education, but also a chance to excel in my career through introspection and self-discovery. NMIMS will give me the opportunity to tailor my academic experience to get the maximum out of these two years.
