‘Why Aditya Birla Group is big in my life’

Aditya Birla Group works in diverse business sectors and touches various aspects of our life either directly or indirectly. The business verticals of ABG serves and connects millions of Indians and shapes a better future for India. The verticals like aluminium, copper, cement, carbon black, chemicals and Insulators touch our lives indirectly. Some or the other aspect of our daily lives uses products of the above verticals. Telecom, Financial services, Fashion and Retail, Textiles and Agri-Business has a direct connect with our lives and the outlook where we interact with and have an ABG experience.

The CSR vision of ABG says, “To actively contribute to the social and economic development of the communities in which we operate. In so doing, build a better, sustainable way of life for the weaker sections of society and raise the country’s Human Development Index.” The various social activities undertaken by ABG has a big impact on lives all over India and the world. This leads to an impact in my life as well as it improves the world I live in and makes it more sustainable, better and with more happier faces than before.

On an Individual level, it’s the Fashion and Retail sector that has the largest involvement in my life. It’s various apparel brands both regular and luxury becomes an important part of my wardrobe. It’s low cost high quality umbrella brands under the name of Pantaloons has changed the way a middle class family shops and enhanced the standard of living. The availability of it’s fashion brands in almost all parts of India has changed the way Indians shop. My favourite brand is available for me whether I live in calcutta or move to Jamshedpur for my work. The widespread nature of it’s outlets has made what I need available when and where I need. Thus giving new meanings to the saying “Customer is King”.

‘How I overcame challenges to achieve my ambitions in life so far’

One of the greatest challenge for me was to speak up to people, have one on one conversations and public speaking. It was very difficult for me to overcome this fear.

After completing my CA, I had to come face to face with this fear of mine in the form of various GDs, interviews and finally the thought of actually working in the corporate world having to speak up. I decided it was time for me to take some radical steps to overcome this fear.

I had always wanted to work outside of my hometown to get the experience of living independently. This decision of finding a job elsewhere was the first step that I took towards my challenge. I faced a lot of rejections before I got my job offer. It was difficult staying positive in the process but I pulled through it and landed a job in Deloitte working in the audit department. As you would guess, audit involves talking to a various people, interactions, conversations on a regular basis, and I was bad at it during the first few months. It was scary and yet it motivated me to better. Gradually I got comfortable with talking to new people, explaining and following up with clients, speaking up in meetings with my managers and audit team. These conscious efforts have shaped me into a more confident woman who is now comfortable in conversations. Even though I am not an orator  yet but I’ve come a long way in this journey. This has not only evolved me as a person but also brought me closer to the ambitions of my life of being a successful professional and give my dues to the society at large.

These achievements is best reflected in the fact that I am here doing an MBA from one of the most prestigious colleges fighting my way through the GD and PI and taking part in the presentations and various other activities of a B-School.
