Being an introvert has been a bittersweet journey. At some times, I cherish the lonely moments I get but at the same time, I get nervous when all eyes are on me. Also known as glossophobia or fear of public speaking, it has been associated with me for a long time. I never considered it as a disadvantage because I never felt the need to do public speaking until entered the corporate world. It was the first week of our induction program at Cisco, my first job as an IT engineer, we were asked to share our experience in front of 150 other new interns chosen from across India.

I was a bad day for me. I couldn’t finish my speech with full confidence and at one point was completely clueless about what to say even though I had a lot to say. It was then that I realized I have to do something to overcome my stage fear. It was necessary as I was part of one of the best companies in the world and good public speaking skill was something which was expected out of every employee. It was a way to express our ideas in front of others, be it our daily agile meeting or big annual events.

I took it as a challenge and started with joining our organization’s own Toastmasters club. The starting was rough and I struggle a lot. But, there was one thing I was sure- not to give up. I practiced with other people in the club, who were on the same journey as mine. With daily practice and working on suggestions, we reached to a point where we were comfortable to present our idea in front of the club members.

Then came the day of cisco annual event. I volunteered to be a host for the events and was able to carry it as per my satisfaction level. Even though I have not achieved the pinnacle of public speaking but I have come very far from being that guy on the first day of job who couldn't share his experience. It was possible with my persistence and the support system to help me overcome my weakness.
