A memorable classroom experience at IIM Trichy.
My most memorable classroom experience in IIM Trichy was of a session of Managerial Communication in my term-II. Many roleplays were designed for that session. The professor randomly assigned roles to a few students and invited them to the centre of the classroom to enact the different cases. One of the interesting role-play that caught my eye was a scenario of Hotel which included a waiter, a manager and two customers-one was a married couple Mr and Mrs Joe who had booked honeymoon suite and another one was a businessman who booked an executive room.
Actually, the scene revolved around the manager who was booking a room for two customers simultaneously, on hearing the word “honeymoon” from one of the customers he was out of his senses hearing only to the content; not listening and daydreaming, therefore, he swiped their booking requirements. So when Mr Prejoe arrived at the hotel manager’s greeting was really humorous -
“Honeymoonnnnn suite hmmmm!” The room was arrested in a state of amusement and captivation. Also when the newly married couple reached the hotel and didn’t find their suite ready, they were really dissatisfied with the hotel management since they had to wait for one an half hour for the further arrangements.
So for one an half hour, Mr and Mrs Joe decided to have lunch at the restobar in the hotel there begins the second scene which included the married couple and the waiter. The waiter, in this case, was also behaving weird- after giving the menu card he was continuously poking the customer for placing the order and finally when the order was placed for vegetarian food he brought non-vegetarian food which further pissed off the customer.
Through this roleplay, I learned some useful things that is how there is a loss of productivity because of barriers of communication and how these barriers led to the loss of business. Importance of Managerial Communication at workplace helps in gaining a better understanding of yourself and others. A successful manager is one who communicates effectively with his clients. It is really essential for managers to express their views clearly to the clients to understand what exactly is expected out of them. Effective communication is the key to success in today’s world.
Which ABG company would you want to work for and why?
Being a marketing student, working in India’s largest pure-play Fashion and Lifestyle Company (ABFRL) would be dreams come true as it would take me a step ahead towards my career goals. As a marketing enthusiast, exposure to various Brands would also give me unparalleled experience in Brand Management and insights on consumer behaviour. Also the Omni-channel presence of ABFRL will help me to hone my digital marketing strategies in which I have a keen interest. In conclusion, I’d like to be part of ABFRL on account of learning and growth opportunities, also because this company has a brand that embodies the attributes of ‘fast growing’ and ‘innovation’.
