It was the first semester of our PGPM program at IIM Rohtak. With a heavy dose of induction, we were ready to ace our academics. The first semester was quite hectic. Classes started at as early as 8:45 AM and goes on till 5 PM. Post classes we had to prepare for next day’s lectures. We barely had time to work, discuss among our team and prepare well for the lectures. Although everyone was trying their best to participate in lecture, it was really difficult to prepare well for every subject. For the lectures in which we were not prepared, we just tried ourselves not to throw out of the classroom.
I still remember that lecture in a finance course. The lecture was at its full swing. We were discussing a case, putting our point of view and listening to our peers. The faculty was there to moderate us. There was a guy, quietly sitting in the other corner of the class. He was kind of introvert. At that time, I was not able to recollect when was the last time I talked to him. I barely saw him participate in lectures. All of the sudden faculty asked him a question of which he was not able to give answers. The faculty was continuously asking him questions; I believe questioning was meant to take him into the discussion. But he was not able to give answers maybe he was not to prepare for that case. Faculty called him on the board for some questions. Of course, he was not able to answer that too. Sitting at the other corner of the class, I was able to feel him. For an introvert standing in front of the whole class and not able to answer questions. All the agony he was going through. It was very clear on his face. I felt bad for him. Finally, class ended, he went back to his seat.
That was the last day I saw him quit in the finance class. He started participating in discussions especially in finance lectures. Post that incident when the whole class kept quiet, he was able to drive the discussion. I believe that incident had a huge impact on him. It was a positive impact. I think that day, the faculty was not limited to just questioning him. The faculty was doing something else. A better and more meaningful work than teaching, shaping a career.
