When I was asked to write about our campus – as to what makes it unique – I did not know where to begin. There are just so many wonderful aspects that make it a unique institution for aspiring young minds. Being part of a B-School it has taken very little time for me to realise that books and theories should not be left alone to the classrooms. But seldom does management students get a chance to try out these learnings in the real world during the time of the course. This is where I believe IIM Kashipur stands out.
IIM Kashipur is firstly the only IIM to be set up in a semi-urban setting. The college is far away from the bustle of the city. A secluded campus which is the home to more than 400 bright minds. When I say “home” I mean it in the truest sense. Every student here works for the betterment of the college. In fact the college itself is completely student operated the establishment. Of course, the academics are handled by trained faculty members and they do keep reminding us that they’re just facilitators in the classroom and the onus is on the students to take up the discussions forward.
Coming back to the point about how we get the chance to implement our classroom learnings on a daily basis. The college has a student body for almost all areas, and all these student bodies are run solely by the students. The administration is happy to let the students take charge as they also feel the learning curve for the students will help them hone their skills and learnings. The college conducts about 120 events in a single academic year. The events are by large divided into four areas. Placements oriented, Management events, Sports events & Cultural events.
Apart from the events basic amenities like food, canteens, hostel facilities, website development, branding of the college, social media visibility, assisting the admission process and guest lectures are all taken care by the students themselves. All these events and management are bound to give exposure to the students in different domains such as Finance, Marketing, Operations, and HR at not just at a broader level but at a more grassroots level. Apart from all this, the number of socially oriented programs conducted in the city of Kashipur is also many, varying from conducting awareness programs, blood donation camps, plantation drives and many more. This has been made an immense impact in sensitizing the students towards their social responsibilities
So at the end of this two-year program, we will have a set of students who have excellent soft skills, problem-solving skills, thought clarity, social responsibility and a proactive outlook when facing a challenge. In short a very employable bunch.
Which ABG company would I want to work for and why?
Idea Cellular Limited is the company I would want to work for. India is currently the world’s second-largest telecommunications market with a subscriber base of 1.20 billion and has registered strong growth in the past decade and half. The telecom industry right now is at a very interesting point as the major players have been established and the competition is getting very fierce. Idea Cellular limited is the third largest player in this market at the moment. Since I am majoring in both Marketing and Finance I am very sure that I will be able to contribute positively for the company in a financial controller role or a brand Manager role.
