‘How you overcame challenges to achieve your ambitions in life so far’.

I had an ambition that every kid in India has. To try and pursue a career in sports. Mine was a bit out of the box though. It wasn’t the stereotypical aspiration towards cricket. I wasn’t trying to play the world’s most popular sport football. The career I wanted to try out makes most people give me a look of utter confusion. I pursued a career in esports. Esports is playing computer games in a competitive environment. The game of choice for me was Counter Strike: Global Offensive. I was lucky to be able to do it. My family was mostly supportive of such a venture which had absolutely no pathway. There was complete uncertainty. The esports scene in India and especially Kolkata was in its absolute nascent stage. It was not only a learning experience but an extremely adventurous one. There was also a lot of pressure since I knew that not just the matches, I played but every second of practice counted too. My family had just one request, that I still pursue my education. The request was completely logical and I stuck to it. I enrolled in my MSc, attended classes, finished my student’s council work and then headed for practice around 7pm. I represented a local café called ARK8. The team practised till around 2 or 3, sometimes later even. There have been a lot of instances where I’ve gone straight to college the next day, after practice. It was a wonderful time in my life, even though I decided not to pursue it full time. Two roads diverged in a yellow wood, and I took the one less travelled by for a while, and that has made a lot of difference.
