THE BREAKFAST CLUB
4th June 2018 was the first day of my new life at SIBM ,Pune. AS I entered the mess at 8 a.m on that bright, chilly morning, I was surrounded by a sea of new faces dressed in white and black formals. Some faces were smiling and hopeful, some looked apprehensive and others looked homesick. I am pretty sure everyone was gauging each other, trying to find someone similar, someone friendly with whom the next 2 years or at least the next two hours in the auditorium would become tolerable. So, we were all busy forming first impressions of each other.
First impressions…this term always reminds me of the 80s classic movie –“The Breakfast Club”. It’s a story about a ragtag bunch of teenagers- a brain, a beauty, a jock, a rebel and a basketcase. All are strangers, with nothing in common , meeting for the first time.. Before the day is over, their lives are changed forever.
I think every college has their own Breakfast Club- a group of people with seemingly nothing in common but who still change each others’ lives. So, let me give you a glimpse into the Breakfast Club of SIBM Pune!
The Brain: Meet the brain of our batch- Samrat Singh. A true-blue finance whiz- he spouts facts and figures at the speed of 3X 108 m/s and asks questions which confound us, our seniors and our teachers alike. He can be found in the library from 7 in the morning to wait, 2 in the morning , dressed impeccably in formals and surrounded by tomes on fixed income securities and derivatives. The surprising fact about him is that he taught kids in an NGO before coming here .Also his Punjabi can put Guru Randhawa to shame.
The Beauty: Meet the beauty of our batch- Arshdeep Kaur or as she -will –correct- you-time- and -again -until -you –get-it-right, Arshi. She might seem snobbish at first but that is until you get to know her and find out that she is the funniest, nicest and ditziest person you ever met. Her one liners can put Chandler Bing to shame. Oh, and did I tell you that she is a closeted Grammar Nazi and a budding writer who aspires to be the next Amish Tripathi?
The Jock: Meet the jock of our batch- Arpan Ekka. He is the guy who wakes up early on a Monday to go for a jog uphill and makes us all feel like sloths compared to him. He can be found playing basketball in the morning, volleyball in the afternoon , football in the evening and on his way to the library to complete a truckload of assignments at night. When not giving us a complex with his superior athletic skills, he can be seen shaking a leg to bad 80s songs or giving people a tough time in dumb charades.
The Rebel : Meet the rebel of our batch- Sahaj Pal Singh. But his rebelliousness is rarely intentional. Its mostly because he is the chill-est guy to grace the campus. He is the go to guy if you want to go for a movie or a meal or just a drive. He is nothing short of a celebrity on campus because he is one of those rare beings who actually has his own car-which is a Godsend on long, dreary weekends.
The Basket case : Meet the basket case of our batch: Shrijoo Kanoria. When I say she is a basket case, I mean she is enthusiastic about anything and everything. She can get excited even about the most boring and mundane classes. She survives on endless cups of coffee and when those cups become one too many, she comes up with revolutionary ideas , which mostly revolve around breaking into people’s rooms to find out what their deepest, darkest secrets are. Her zaniness is what endears her to people and there isn’t a single person on campus who is not aware who the legendary Shrijoo is.
These people are just a tiny part of the diverse and amazing student body we have at SIBM Pune. More than the campus, teachers or lectures, it is these people who will stay in our memories, even after the two years are done and dusted.
Which ABG company would you want to work for and why?
If I had to choose an ABG company to work for, I would choose Ultra Tech Cement because it is the largest cement company in India and one of the leading producers globally. Because I am pursuing my MBA in Human Resources, managing people in different companies across different scenarios will be a challenging and fulfilling job, where I get to learn new things everyday.
