Human Resource Management is the core of any organisation. The first session of Leadership and Capacity Building is the most memorable in my life.

The session started out with ice-breaking and the interaction with our Dr. Sonal Shree built in us the confidence and enthusiasm to be successful leaders at the end of the semester. We were next elaborated about the different type of leadership that made me realise that every person can be a leader. Leaders are not born, but leaders are made.

After our brief introduction, we were asked to divide among ourselves into a group of four depending on our most dominant trait. The traits were “On the goers”, “Speculators”, ”Detailers” and “People managers”. I am a person who always loves to be on the toes. I love to make a rapid decision as it helps the work get done. I did realise that this rapid decision might sometimes lead to a hasty decision. This group discussion proved this point.

The topic of our group discussion was our IT company “A” decided to merge with company “B”. We have to list out the major decisions that we have to take on this merger. We then got started. As our group name suggests we were all on the goers. We made a list of decisions but I realised at the end that my decision had built up the biggest controversy in the discussion and created the space for an actual argument over the discussion. The fact being everyone is an on goer none had any problem with my suggestion.

First, the speculators had put up their points. They have listed out around 6 points which was more generic in nature. I too realised that they have used the word “speculation” more than required. The only argument we had was they should be in more detail but that was the job of the detailers. Next, we were asked to put up our points. My point had led to a real serious discussion and we had a strong opposition from “people managers”. Our professor had to intervene to end the discussion. Next, we had our detailers who had way too many details but they did not cover as on the goers had done a pretty good job by already covering those points.

The last were the “People managers”. They felt more like “personnel managers” but I realised that most of them were freshers and naïve to the real scenario of the Real Company merger. Their points were too people-centric and neglected completed the budget of the company. They were then bombarded with questions. Mostly from the on-the-goers. The Professor had to intervene again to end the discussion. She asked us to just exchange our roles and talk in the other perspective. Everyone was dumbstruck as we felt the other was actually right in their position. At last, we were asked to address the mistakes that we could have rectified. Thus ended our healthy discussion.

My learnings from the discussion were to be a successful manager one should possess all the four traits. It will only then help us being successful. Last but not the least, the pointer I proposed in the discussion was “Layoffs”, though the word might sting us, we human resource managers are bothered the most, but the fact is that “layoffs” are inevitable and need to be faced.

WHICH ABG COMPANY WOULD I WANT TO WORK FOR AND WHY?

I would love to associate with Aditya Birla Capital Limited: Aditya Finance Limited. Though I am from a Human Resource background, my inclination towards financial services made me choose it. It will open a horizon of opportunities for me to learn more about financial services.
