On 6th September 2018 an historical decision was taken by the Supreme Court of India wherein it decriminalized consensual sexual acts of adults in private in its application to Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Queers (LGBTQs) communities. By scrapping this law, India joins the path the other nations have taken to eliminate such a biased and cruel law. By doing so the Supreme Court has put an end to the age long discrimation towards the different spectrum of people who have been treated as a taboo, looked down upon and avoided in the society. It has brought huge relief and smiles to the faces of all the people. The different spectrum of people need no longer be silent in expressing their preferences, gender and orientation etc. They like every other living being, deserve to be treated equally and with respect and love. With different nations taking this righteous decisions, hope the other nations too follow suit to provide the freedom, respect and love that all of its people rightly deserve. This move of the Supreme Court is just the beginning to the long journey that leads to the destination of ultimate freedom to the LGBTQ+ community. Just a Supreme Court order will not be enough to bring about the acceptance of LGBTQ+ community in the society. People need to broaden their perspective and understand that just like the different colours of the rainbow and different flavours of ice cream, there are different kinds of people who have their own choice of preferences. LGBTQ topics should not be hushed when talked about in the society. They should be freely discussed by the parents and the teachers at schools and universities so that the young people have more courage and freedom to accept and talk about and feel proud of who they are. People need to embrace each other setting aside such differences and treat them equally and value them for the person they truly are. Hope we reach the destination soon where everyone is treated equally.
