Every dream and all the accomplishments of humanity have begun as a single thought. My dream started taking root when I was looking at the stock market one day and thought to myself “well, this looks interesting”. And before I knew it that thought had transformed into curiosity, leading me down a winding but ultimately rewarding journey.
My first stumbling block was of course the fact that I was an engineer. How could an engineer, who is trained in the practical applications of science understand economics and finance, which are part science and part art. Or so I thought. Engineering had equipped me with the analytical mind-set which proved crucial in understanding the mathematics behind demand and supply, currency exchange rates and asset pricing. Understanding economics wasn’t going to be hard after all.
The next stumbling block was the need for a formal education in finance. MBA is one of most coveted degrees in our country and it was my ticket. But MBA entrance exams are a tough nut to crack. The competition is high, candidates are ruthless and seats are few. The first year I attempted the entrance exams I got poor scores. It was disheartening to say the least. A year of your life going down the drain is not an easy pill to swallow. People told me to look for a job and try again in a few years. But that would mean giving up on my dream and I wasn’t prepared to do that.
So I redoubled my efforts, put everything I had into the preparation once again. I didn’t have a job and was unlikely to get one as I had been unemployed for a while. This was a do or die situation. Through my hard work, the constant support of my family and sheer luck I aced the exams. Next came the interviews and group discussions which also went very well. Finally, I got a call from NMIMS Mumbai for MBA which was an exhilarating feeling which I will never forget. In hindsight, I am glad I made the hard choice of sticking to MBA preparation instead of going job hunting because now I can pursue my dream.
