The Aditya Birla group traces its roots back to the 1850s when Seth Shiv Narain Birla established a cotton trading business in Pilani, a small town in the Indian state of Rajasthan. While the business flourished during the 1850s, it was only in the early twentieth century that the late Ghanshyamdas Birla, today considered the founder of the group, established a multitude of businesses in key industrial sectors such as cement, aluminium, textiles and fibre, and chemicals, thereby transforming the trading business into an industrial powerhouse. As India embarked on its liberalisation drive, the Aditya Birla group grew at an unprecedented pace, thereby mirroring India’s economic progress. Today, the group comprises thriving businesses operating in fourteen industry sectors; these businesses collectively generate over forty-four billion dollars in revenue, making the Aditya Birla group one of the largest conglomerates of India. Over time, the group has grown both organically and inorganically to become an undisputed leader in several key sectors such as aluminium rolling, viscose staple fibre, and carbon black. Besides, the group occupies an enviable position in sectors such as telecom, cement, and insulators. The Aditya Birla group has played a pivotal role in satisfying the demands of the Indian consumer; from dressing the aspirational Indian consumer to connecting millions of Indians via an integrated wireless network, the Aditya Birla group touches billions of lives daily. While business is usually fraught with risk, a strong management team can play a crucial role in mitigating the vagaries of the market. Owing to its exemplary leadership, the Aditya Birla group has emerged as an Indian behemoth despite operating in a challenging macroeconomic environment. My earliest association with a Birla group product dates back to my days as a junior college student. As an active sportsperson, I was heavily involved in athletics. My practice sessions, starting around 5 AM in the morning, would often extend until afternoon; needless to say, I had embarked on a daunting journey. Owing to the extreme pressure, I often contemplated quitting; it was my coach, however, who persistently encouraged me to keep going. While my sessions started early in the morning, it was only around 9 AM that I could take a break. My erratic hunger pangs would often impede my performance. Besides, I constantly craved warm food, which was impossible to get. My mother thus constantly looked for ways to keep food warm for an extended period of time. It was during that phase that one of her friends advised her to use aluminium foils. While my mother was initially sceptical about the idea, she nevertheless decided to try it out. The following day, as I sat down to eat, the tantalising aroma of home-cooked food wafted from my lunch box; I was instantly delighted. To my surprise, the food was unusually warm. As I gleefully told my mother that her problem had finally been solved, the joy on her face became palpable. Consequently, I never craved warm food again – that significantly improved my performance as I could now focus entirely on my practice. My consistent performance catapulted me into the league of the top-performing athletes of my college. The memory of the Freshwrapp foil pack thus became deeply entrenched in my mind. Even today, the brand evokes a strong sense of nostalgia. Needless to say, Freshwrapp holds a special place in my heart.
