How do you think it feels when a professor is teaching a core marketing subject and he suddenly stops because…Whoa!! There are clouds in the classroom and all over the campus!! How often and in how many institutes in the country or world do you think this happens? This is what makes my IIM Shillong My campus in clouds the most unique campus among any campuses of the country.
A little more than a year ago I was there trying to take the new surroundings in as our taxi drove up the long winding path with green, coniferous trees and a basketball court to the left along the entrance of IIM Shillong. I believe I am somebody who is all for new places and experiences, and the place I was going to spend 2 years of my life in looked really promising from the moment the taxi crossed the Umium Lake where grey clouds at eye level drifted over the waterbody and made it past the gates welcoming us to the campus and the 2-year life here.
It is always said that it is never about the number of people that surround you but it is about who they are. This is especially true for us in IIM Shillong. Though many people might see this as a problem I believe the best thing that has happened to this college and in my stay here is the only 180 people of us who stay here. TO add on to that the smaller size of our college due to the temporary campus that we reside in right now has also increased the uniqueness of my college as it is quite unique for a college of this stature to have such a small batch strength.
IIM Shillong was established as the 7th IIM in the country with an objective to bring business and management expertise to the North East region. Since its inception, college has been focusing on Sustainability as one of its core values.
Located at “Scotland of the East”, the city that is nestled between mountains and dense clouds, one would be mesmerized by the tremendous beauty it offers as they would make their path through the gates of IIM Shillong campus that is lined with tall pine trees and bright flowers as you walk to the main building. Studying in a paradise is the added advantage of being part of the IIM Shillong fraternity. Being in the abode of clouds, it is not uncommon to find the clouds wading through the campus making it even more picturesque. When the days are packed with tons of pre-reads, classroom sessions, case discussions, project discussions with the study groups, meeting the sacrosanct deadlines, a mini stroll through the zigzag roads in this scenic beauty is sufficient to rejuvenate and charge up our minds.
They call it the “Scotland of the East”. They call it the place where the God resides. I got an opportunity to witness it on 22nd June 2017, when I visited Guwahati for the first time. With a lot of excitement in heart mingled with the proud feeling of getting an opportunity to fulfill your dreams, I landed in Guwahati. The journey from Guwahati to Shillong is mesmerizing and will give you a brief trailer of the wonderful picture that is going to happen in the next two years.
While choosing IIM Shillong as my choice for the future, the location of the institute was not on my list. However, the foundation course of the institute made me realise its significance. The one-week program focussed on sustainability might seem futile to an outsider, but the change in perception that it brings is unparalleled. And one of the most important stimulators in bringing about this change is the location of the Institute.
IIM Shillong previously known as RGIIM Shillong was established in 2007, it was the first premier management institute established in the northeastern part of India. The objective was to promote management education in the northeastern part of the country. Through the years the institute achieved many milestones and reached greater heights.
