Being a son on an SBI employee, you’ve got to learn one basic principle – Never get attached to a city or its people. This philosophy did catch up to me even after some serious resistance. Please don’t mistake me for a person devoid of emotions, I am just a guy who is extremely practical about the choices that I have. And this venturous life of mine eventually made me believe that I am not a person who can carry a long distance relationship. Yes I am a possessive boyfriend, I fear the alpha males around my girl but my biggest fear is to lose track and wrong my commitments.
I met Prerna in my final year of Engineering and we’ve been dating since then. After completing engineering, she went to North Eastern University, Boston which meant we literally had to compete with time just to make a phone call. But when I started my job at Mumbai where I worked US client, it was not so difficult to manage a few phone call. I was enjoying my work but she on the other end was struggling a lot. A new country and the rigorous competition all starting to play with her head. There were a few opportunists around her who just tried to take advantage of her emotional state at that point of time, but all I could think of was ‘If only I was there with her’. But life went on and we managed to pull it off one step at a time. We miss the anniversary dinners and the untimely pani-puri visits, but we try compensating it with the cute texts. Most of her messages end with ‘….thanks for being there’. Irony, isn’t it??
It has been 3 years since we’ve been together. She is working for Motorola there and I am pursuing my MBA. The challenge to resist weak temptations and stand by commitments is what this relationship has taught me. Or if I look at it the other way around, maybe I always had it in me and all I needed was some motivation (प्रेरणा).
