Internships and engineering. The two words that together make most students frown. Fortunately for me, the case was totally different. I did my 4-month internship at Idea Cellular Limited in Noida. I went in with zero expectations, having heard about the lukewarm internship experiences in various companies from my seniors.
January 7th, 2019-I was standing in the lobby of my new home for the next 4 months and was already wondering how I could spend my time doing other things. By the end of the week, I had a totally different narrative, and couldn't wait to go to office. How?
The first day at the office, I was treated as an employee the manager had to work with, rather than just another intern. I was allotted a proper team(Route Optimization Team) which worked round the clock and managed the networks of Idea in Delhi-NCR. Over this week, I was given proper training( and also a fair amount of criticism) and the following week, I was supposed to start working with the team. An intern, just a week old, was given a chance to work on the most critical part of the service. What more could I ask for? I thought back to the seniors who told me about their experiences and could only imagine the contrast in experience I was having.
The team never made me feel like an intern and used to let me take critical decisions on my own. By the end of the second month, the team used to give me additional work so that we stay ahead of schedule.
When the internship ended, I was full of confidence and really thankful to the team for the wonderful experience and guidance provided.
I can truly say that the internship at Idea Cellular Limited changed my opinion about corporate culture and helped me hone my skills by being extremely supportive.
