Like many ambitious students, I had my heart set on top-tier institutions like SRCC after Class 12. I was prepared, focused, and determined. But life, as it often does, had other plans. The COVID-19 pandemic disrupted everything. Board exams were canceled, and uncertainty loomed large. Instead of waiting for clarity that never came, I chose to enroll in a local college.

Initially, it felt like a compromise. But over time, I realized it was actually an opportunity that became the foundation of my personal and professional growth. It was not where I expected to be, but it was where I needed to be to start my journey of self-discovery.

Rather than dwell on what I missed, I chose to make the most of what I had. I maintained a strong GPA throughout college, not just for the sake of scores, but to prove to myself that excellence isn’t tied to a college’s name. It’s about effort, mindset, and consistency.

Beyond academics, I actively sought out ways to grow and step outside my comfort zone. I published research papers in my areas of interest, joined the Rotaract Club where I engaged in meaningful social work, and became part of the college’s incubation centre. I explored new opportunities through multiple clubs and took part in competitions at both inter-college and national levels. Sometimes I won, and sometimes I didn’t — but every experience taught me something new. Representing my college on big stages helped me understand the value of teamwork, handling pressure, and thinking on my feet — lessons no classroom could teach.

These experiences shaped my personality, helped me build confidence, and gave me a clearer picture of who I wanted to become. By the end of my undergrad journey, I knew I was ready for the next challenge, one that would push me academically and intellectually. That’s when I decided to take the CAT exam.

I prepared with discipline and focus, applying everything I’d learned — time management, problem-solving, and perseverance. The hard work paid off. I received interview calls from several IIMs, including Lucknow, Kozhikode, Indore, Mumbai, and Shillong, as well as all the new IIMs.

Looking back, I now realize it was never just about the CAT score. It was about the journey — the decisions I made, the obstacles I overcame, and the mindset I developed along the way.

To anyone who feels like they’re not in the “perfect” place right now, don’t worry. Where you start doesn’t define where you finish. Make every step count. The climb is absolutely worth it.
