After an expectedly underwhelming placements season during the pandemic's peak, the IIMs—especially the top six—saw impressive recovery and growth in the placement figures, with institutes such as IIM Lucknow continuing to see a double-digit increase in the average and median salaries offered. Placements in 2022 at the new IIMs were also quite impressive, with IIM Udaipur seeing staggering growth across key recruitment parameters. The IIMs have their brand value going for them, in terms of attracting recruiters and growing salaries. But what of other top-tier non-IIM business schools also sought-after for their placements? How have they emerged out of the pandemic's adverse effects on the job market? Our research suggests that while these pre-eminent institutes have seen indubitable growth, there is a major concern around plummeting recruiter numbers. Let's explore this by breaking down placements at what are considered to be the top non-IIM MBA colleges in India: FMS Delhi, XLRI, SPJIMR Mumbai, IIFT Delhi, MDI Gurgaon, and SJMSoM IIT Bombay.

Underwhelming Numbers At MDI Gurgaon, SJMSoM Sees Excellent Growth In Salaries

At the outset, every top non-IIM b-school has seen indubitable growth across most recruitment parameters. But a closer look reveals that some institutes may be struggling to see growth in salary figures, while others are seeing the number of recruiters on campus fall drastically as compared to the previous year. At MDI Gurgaon, for instance, the highest salary shot up by an eye-watering 160 percent, touching INR 1.14 crores. Even then, the average salary increased by a notable yet underwhelming 15 percent. Even more significant was the marginal 4 percent increase in the median salary offered to the graduating batch. To compare, MDI did better in a pandemic year than in a post-pandemic placement season. Could a massively increased batch size be a contributor to the institute's growing but somewhat unimpressive placement figures? In 2022, there was shock and awe when SJMSoM featured amongst India's top-10 non-IIM business schools. But the institute's placement figures more than explain the predilection for IIT Bombay's MBA institute. While maintaining a largely similar batch size, SJMSoM has seen a 17 to 18 percent growth in the average and median salaries offered to the batch. More impressively, these placement figures are comparable (and even better!) to those at IIFT Delhi and MDI Gurgaon. After the domination of undergrad engineering, could the IITs be emerging leaders in the MBA space as well?   FMS Delhi has seen very impressive placement figures this year, and the most promising recovery among the top MBA colleges in India. Despite increasing its batch size by a fifth and seeing only a 5 percent increase in the number of recruiters on campus, the institute saw an incredible increase in the average and median salaries offered—figures comparable to pre-pandemic numbers. But as we noted in our analysis of placements at new IIMs, there is one major area of concern regarding final placements at Indian b-schools: figures around the number of recruiters on campus are nosediving. At SPJIMR—one of India's (and the world's) leading management institutes—the number of recruiters on campus fell by nearly 47 percent this year. In fact, numbers are bad at all institutes in this report with FMS and SJMSoM barely emerging as exceptions. What is the reason for such a plunge in these numbers?

Consulting, General Management The Most Sought-After Domains/Industries For India's Top Talent

The allure of high salaries and good exit opportunities make Consulting the most sought-after industry for graduating batches. Unsurprisingly, MBA students at these top non-IIM institutes are also flocking to Consulting jobs to begin their management careers. In fact, there is a notable inclination towards generalist roles, which may be a result of simply not knowing which post-MBA career to choose and begin with.

Records Break At SPJIMR, PPOs Aplenty At India's Top B-Schools

Here are some other important highlights from placements at FMS Delhi, XLRI, SPJIMR Mumbai, IIFT Delhi, MDI Gurgaon, and SJMSoM IIT Bombay. For more details, check out our collection placement reports for the Class of 2022!
