Rannbhoomi – IIM Shillong’s Sports Extravaganza

Rannbhoomi – IIM Shillong’s Sports Extravaganza

As one walks into our recreation room, one might expect the same things one sees almost every single day. A couple of guys playing table tennis, a few others watching television and some simply making their presence felt with incessant comments about the players’ mistakes echoing in the background. However, the inauguration of our sporting extravaganza would not be just another routine evening in IIM Shillong. One could instantly notice that there were more than ten times the usual number of people that would be in the vicinity of the Ping-Pong table, all of them cheering, all of them excited and all of them in eager anticipation of something big. It doesn’t take Sherlock to deduce that finally ‘Rannbhoomi’ has arrived.

A Night to Remember at Avenues 2014

A Night to Remember at Avenues 2014

About a decade ago, Indian television saw a paradigm shift of sorts. The Saas and their Bahus were slowly losing their ascendency over kitty parties, kids like me talked something apart from Sachin, Sehwag and Sourav and I did not attend the corporate over-the-vending-machine chats. I assume they too were talking about ‘The next singing superstar’. The shift brought along with itself a horde of reality shows. Singing, dancing, stand-up comedy and for the lack of a well-defined title to confer, talent in general. Most of us are now losing track of which season our then favorite show will enter the coming year. Many of us, including me already have.

What it takes to organize a B-School Fest - Avenues 2014 at SJMSOM

What it takes to organize a B-School Fest - Avenues 2014 at SJMSOM

Three weeks into our MBA course, one fine evening while going through my mail inbox, a certain mail caught my eye. The subject read “Avenues Volunteers”. Not sure what to expect, I clicked it open. The mail came with an attachment in the form of a Google documents form. It read out “We start off the selection process for Avenues 2014!!” and the form consisted of preferences to be filled regarding our choice of events, in which we want to volunteer for. “Why now?” I wondered aloud. It was just the end of July, and Avenues, the Business Festival of Shailesh J Mehta School of Management, IIT Bombay, doesn’t start before October end. Now, when there’s just a few more days to go, before the 3-day mega event actually starts, I realize what it actually takes to organize a business festival. Months of dedicated hard work from the Overall Coordinators and the Volunteers, meticulous planning and thoughtful innovations in framing new events is what is required to make sure that the event takes place without hassles and technical glitches.
