Xavier Institute of Management, Bhubaneswar witnessed yet another fruitful summer internship placement week, with over 80 organizations visiting the campus. Apart from the regular recruiters, which XIMB has always cherished, various new and emerging market leaders have also participated and offered coveted profiles to the MBA-BM and MBA-HRM students over a variety of domains.
On the last day of my job, one of the most common aphorisms that I heard was, “Prepare well for your second innings of student life.” I did not put much thought to it then, believed it to be just another adage used by people to bid you off on your journey. The gravity of the statement was realised by me only when I actually entered into the “second innings”. Trust me when I say it, sitting in classes is not the same as before. A few months back, you were one of the ‘artisans in making’ writing codes, handling logistics, consulting with clients and bringing profits to your company. Suddenly, you are back to the basics of all of this, sitting in the lecture rooms learning about these. Of course, you learn a lot while you work in a company, but experiential learning procedure is different from that of an academic curriculum. This made me come up with a small compendium for aspirants with work experience, who are on their way to join b-schools.
Unlike many top b-school campuses, where slowdown effect has been felt in the placements due to demonetization, the placement scenario at Institute of Management Technology (IMT), Hyderabad, looks to be good. Strong corporate connect is seen as the major differentiator. IMT Hyderabad engages with members of the corporate world through several initiatives. Practitioners and business leaders play an integral part in course development and delivery and 15% sessions in regular courses are taken by business leaders from industry to familiarise the students with the real-time business scenario. The Union budget was announced by the Honorable Finance Minister of India, Mr. Arun Jaitley on the 1st of February, 2017. This budget had many firsts. For the first time the Union budget was announced on the first day of February and not the last. Also, for the first time the Railway budget was not a separate affair, it was clubbed with the Union budget. The highlights of the budget included the focus on pro-poor schemes, huge spending on infrastructure projects and farmer welfare schemes. Not much was changed when it came to the tax structure, besides slashing the tax rate to 5% for the lowest taxable bracket. In fact, indirect taxes were not touched at all as the Goods and Services Tax is expected to become a reality soon.
