I couldn’t believe my ears. My teammate Archi had just called me to tell them we had made it to the National Finals of ACTapult. It had been a hard time recently. Life had been moving at 200 km/h. The dreaded first semester of B-school was at its peak. Placecomm sessions, classes, placement prep and all the jazz. I didn’t remember the last time I felt energised.
“Time flies but memories last forever.”
Ever since I watched the movie 'Barbarians at the gate,' I was hooked to Private Equity. The world of deal-making and value creation fascinates me; Fundraising, Investing, Monitoring, Exiting. It was the time of summer placements at our Kampus. The Rohatyn Group, an emerging market focused PE firm based out of New York, had come to recruit for India offices. The recruitment process was arduous; a workshop for shortlisted candidates, written test, informal interaction with the MD, and finally, the personal interview. The verdict: Selected!
Right from school, our career decisions are influenced by our peers - which streams to choose after 10th, which colleges to apply to, which MBA institute to chase, which companies to get placed at, and so on. But most of us miss out on one key aspect while choosing what to do with our careers - hearing from someone who has been in our shoes before. This thought also reverberates in the words of this seasoned investment banker and former Director at Merrill Lynch, who believes that if you truly want to move up in your career, you cannot aspire to be at the level of peers.
