The campus of IIM Calcutta, or ‘Joka’ as we fondly call it, is beautiful in its own way. Well, to set the record straight, despite being the biggest campus among the Holy Trinity in terms of area, it certainly is not as well-maintained as the other two. Though that in no way means it is any less beautiful, after all it is the campus of The Seven Lakes, the lakes which were envisaged to symbolize ‘cauldrons of knowledge’. The lakes, like almost all other significant structures on campus, have a great deal of history behind them. The Seven Lakes symbolize seven of the most legendary professors of the institute. Myth has it, whenever the lakes overflow, the placements skyrocket for that year. Besides, the campus is essentially a bird sanctuary, and provides ample opportunities for budding ornithologists, or photographers,(or perhaps even mere admirers of natural beauty) to sight birds of different species. And to add to that, one gets to see some rarely sighted animals such as the Monitor Lizard(whom we affectionately call ‘Monty’), swans, and ducks.
I don’t claim to be a clairvoyant. But everyone at some point of time experiences something deep and raw about an expectation. That was how I felt when I cracked my Axis interview. The interview in itself was peculiarly ravishing. It was like a normal discussion with friends. Reminded me of my IIM Calcutta interview. Anyways, I was flown to Mumbai (extra leg space, complimentary meal) for the internship and being a fresher, I was quite skeptical about the work. But I was in for a surprise.
Every human being in this world has his/her own individuality and he/she has his/her own way of living. However, in today’s competitive world, only the ones that can distinguish themselves from this broad and general category are the highly successful ones. And any person, who has the ability to be very patient, is hard working and has enough self-motivation, is also most likely to be the highly successful. An internship with a company, which is well established, is a brilliant source of knowledge. Firstly, I will be able to physically see and experience the concepts that I have learned throughout my life. This provides me a chance to reflect upon what I have learned in the past. On the other hand, I will be able to gain some very important insights of working with senior officials in reality.

From the world of academics to the corporate setup - summer internship bridges the gap and provides the most crucial transformation in the life of every B-School student. After a year of case studies, projects and theoretical rigor, it is now time to apply those learnings in the real life assignments. Having a prior work experience with one of India’s leading public sector banks, I always aimed to intern for a Financial Organization and I was lucky enough to be offered a summer internship role with Ocwen Financials, one of the leading non-banking Mortgage Service and asset management companies, in their Mumbai office.
So here I was opening my course pack of 4th semester with a gloomy face. Yes... I was back to my college, IIM Calcutta, after having completed my summer internship with P&G under their BRM role. The exposure and knowledge that I had gained working under experienced professionals who achieve new heights everyday in their domain, was immense. To me, theory looked a mirage now. I thought that it was so easy to do marketing. All one needs is a bunch of ideas put in place using new advertising methods, social media, print ads and all gimmicks we read in the bible "Kotler". Sadly and fortunately my illusion was awaiting a major setback in the upcoming months.
