Hiranya Karnatak: Best 50 | India's Most Promising Incoming MBA Students 2025 | XLRI Delhi NCR

Hiranya Karnatak is a finance professional turned management student, currently pursuing his MBA at XLRI. Prior to XLRI, he worked for 22 months at Deloitte in the Corporate Finance team, where he focused on renewable energy transactions, including M&A, debt refinancing, and project financing deals. An alumnus of Shaheed Bhagat Singh College, Delhi University, he served as the Treasurer of the college's Finance and Investment Cell, leading a team of 80+ across multiple verticals. Originally from Uttarakhand, Hiranya admires Ruskin Bond for vividly capturing the region's beauty and simplicity. The author's descriptions of Uttarakhand deeply resonate with Hiranya, making Bond his all-time favourite writer. A passionate Formula 1 enthusiast, his love for the sport began when he heard about India's first Grand Prix. His all-time favourite driver is Sebastian Vettel, who famously won all three editions of the Indian Grand Prix, leaving a lasting impression with his dominance and sportsmanship.

One of his proudest achievements is the journey from a college student with little exposure to case competitions or the corporate world, to earning a full-time offer at Deloitte. It began with him stepping out of his comfort zone to participate in Deloitte's national case competition, where his team became campus finalists and were ranked among the top 64 in India. This led to an internship at Deloitte which was his first real exposure to the professional world. He made the most of that opportunity, impressed his mentors and ultimately converted it into a pre-placement offer before graduating.

Deloitte is a global professional services firm offering audit, consulting, tax, and financial advisory services to help clients solve complex business challenges and drive sustainable growth. At Deloitte, he advised clients on structured financial transactions including project financing, debt refinancing and M&A, primarily in the renewable energy and infrastructure sectors. His work involved preparing industry reports, teasers, information memorandums, and financial models to support investor outreach and due diligence. He has contributed to fundraises for over 1 GW of renewable assets, advised a Maharatna on a buy-side acquisition, and served as process advisor for the demerger of a leading Indian MNC.

What sets him apart from other MBA students is his adaptability. Growing up, he attended five different schools across various cities due to his fathers transferable job. Each move meant adjusting to new academic systems, social circles, and cultural environments. These constant transitions pushed him out of his comfort zone early on and taught him how to adapt quickly, stay resilient, and thrive in unfamiliar settings. Today, he approaches change not with hesitation but with curiosity and openness. These qualities help him stay agile, embrace uncertainty, and grow through every new experience, both personally and professionally.

With the global shift toward sustainability, he strongly believes that renewable energy is the future, not just environmentally, but strategically and economically. During his 22-month tenure at Deloitte, he worked on multiple high-value deals in the renewable energy sector, including M&A, project financing, and debt refinancing. These transactions gave him deep, practical exposure to sector-specific financial modelling, risk assessment, and due diligence. He collaborated closely with cross-functional teams including legal, technical, ESG, and tax advisors, which helped him develop a well-rounded understanding of the complexities involved in executing such deals. This experience has equipped him with a skill set highly relevant to the evolving energy landscape: analytical rigor, commercial awareness, and execution capability. Now, as an MBA student at XLRI, he is further strengthening his strategic thinking and leadership abilities, ensuring he can not only understand but also drive impactful decisions in the renewable energy space and beyond.

One trait he is actively developing is the ability to stay continuously informed in a rapidly evolving global landscape. He has had an innate curiosity since childhood, a drive to learn about new ideas, trends, and technologies. In today's world, that curiosity extends to understanding market movements, geopolitical shifts, and especially the transformative rise of AI. He is not only leveraging AI tools to process and analyse information faster but also staying updated on how advancements in AI are fundamentally reshaping industries, economies, and ways of working. This awareness helps him think more critically, anticipate change, and make well-informed, future-ready decisions.

Another aspect that strengthens his candidature is the diverse set of experiences he has gathered across different stages of life. Studying in multiple cities exposed him to a variety of perspectives and cultures, enriching his thinking and making him more adaptable. He actively participated in school activities, from playing a beggar in one play to Mahatma Gandhi in another, embracing every opportunity to step outside his comfort zone. He has also won multiple medals in English Olympiads, reflecting his early academic curiosity. In college, despite being online, he explored his interests through various clubs including finance, economics, marketing, and entrepreneurship, organising events, networking with seniors, and taking part in case competitions. These experiences shaped him into a curious, participative, and well-rounded individual.
