IIM Calcutta MBA Admission Criteria 2027–29: CAT Cutoffs, Selection Process, PI-WAT Weights and Work Experience

IIM Calcutta has released its admission policy for the MBA batch of 2027–2029, outlining the selection process from the initial CAT 2026 shortlist to final admission offers.

The process has three key stages: CAT percentile-based screening, composite-score-based shortlisting for the Personal Interview (PI) and Writing Ability Test (WAT), and final selection based on CAT, PI, WAT, academic diversity and work experience.

One important point for aspirants: CAT accounts for 56 points out of 85 during PI-WAT shortlisting, but 30 points out of 100 in the final selection score. PI carries the highest weight in the final stage at 48%.

1. Who is eligible to apply?

Candidates must hold a bachelor’s degree with at least 50% marks or equivalent CGPA. The minimum is 45% for SC, ST and PwD candidates. The degree must be from a recognised institution as specified in the admission policy.

Candidates appearing for their final-year examination, or awaiting results after completing degree requirements, can apply.

Candidates with integrated master’s or dual degrees directly after Class 12 will be assessed using the marks considered equivalent to a bachelor’s degree.

Candidates with foreign degrees must obtain equivalence certification from the Association of Indian Universities.

Certain candidates graduating in 2020–2023 who received only pass marks or promotion because examinations or marks were not awarded can apply, subject to the required institutional certificate.

Final-year candidates selected for admission must submit a certificate confirming completion of degree requirements by June 30, 2027. Required final marksheets and certificates must be submitted by September 30, 2027, failing which registration will be cancelled.

Meeting the minimum eligibility criteria does not guarantee a shortlist or admission.

2. Stage I: Minimum CAT 2026 cutoff

Candidates must meet the minimum sectional and overall CAT 2026 percentile requirements and secure non-negative raw scores in all three CAT sections to be considered for the next stage.

Category VARC DILR QA Overall
Open 80 80 75 85
EWS 70 65 65 75
NC-OBC 70 65 65 75
SC 65 60 60 70
ST 55 55 55 65
PwD 45 45 45 55

These are minimum cutoffs, not guaranteed interview-call thresholds. IIM Calcutta states that actual cutoffs may be significantly higher depending on the number of candidates shortlisted in each category.

3. Stage II: How IIM Calcutta shortlists candidates for PI and WAT

Candidates who clear Stage I are evaluated using a composite score worth 85 points.

Parameter Weight
CAT 2026 overall scaled score 56
Class 10 marks 10
Class 12 marks 15
Gender diversity 4
Total 85

The CAT component is calculated as:

Candidate’s CAT overall scaled scoreMaximum possible CAT overall scaled score×56\frac{\text{Candidate's CAT overall scaled score}}{\text{Maximum possible CAT overall scaled score}}\times56Maximum possible CAT overall scaled scoreCandidate’s CAT overall scaled score×56

Female and transgender candidates receive 4 gender-diversity points at this stage. IIM Calcutta also states that it welcomes LGBTQ+ candidates.

How Class 10 and Class 12 marks are scored

Percentage Class 10 points Class 12 points
80% and above 10 15
75% to below 80% 8 12
70% to below 75% 6 9
65% to below 70% 4 6
60% to below 65% 2 3
Below 60% 0 0

Marks are calculated using the aggregate of all subjects appearing on the marksheet, regardless of whether the board includes each subject when calculating its official percentage.

After composite scores are calculated, IIM Calcutta determines category-wise cutoffs and the number of candidates to be called for PI and WAT. The number of interview calls depends on the incoming batch size and is at the institute’s discretion.

4. Stage III: Final selection and weightage

Clearing the interview shortlist does not guarantee admission. Candidates who appear for PI and WAT receive a final composite score out of 100.

Parameter Final weight
CAT 2026 score 30%
Personal Interview (PI) 48%
Writing Ability Test (WAT) 8%
Academic diversity 6%
Work experience 8%
Total 100%

PI is the most heavily weighted component, contributing 48% of the final score. CAT contributes 30%, while WAT accounts for 8%.

Academic diversity: Who gets the points?

IIM Calcutta awards academic-diversity points based on the candidate’s degree combination and professional qualifications.

Academic background Points
Bachelor’s, master’s or integrated master’s in engineering 0
Bachelor’s degree in a non-engineering stream 4
Dual bachelor’s degree in Law, such as BA LLB or BCom LLB 5
Engineering bachelor’s + non-engineering master’s 2
Non-engineering bachelor’s + non-engineering master’s 5
Dual/integrated degree with bachelor’s and master’s in non-engineering 5
Dual/integrated degree with engineering bachelor’s and non-engineering master’s 1
CA/ICWA/CS/FIAI without a bachelor’s degree 5
CA/ICWA/CS/FIAI with a bachelor’s degree 6
CA/ICWA/CS/FIAI, with or without a bachelor’s, plus a non-engineering master’s 6
Integrated bachelor’s degree in Law + non-engineering master’s 6

The categories are designed to be mutually exclusive. For certain categories, candidates must upload marksheets proving completion of the relevant qualification with their PI application. Candidates still completing eligible degrees must meet the prescribed completion and document-submission deadlines.

5. How work experience is evaluated

Work experience carries 8 points in the final selection score. IIM Calcutta calculates it using completed months of eligible employment as of January 31, 2027, with a maximum of 8 points.

Only experience gained after completing the bachelor’s degree is considered. The policy excludes internships, apprenticeships, articleships, training, projects or work forming part of a curriculum, and unpaid work.

Candidates must support their claims with:

An employer letter on company letterhead, signed by an authorised signatory, mentioning employment dates, designation and a brief description of responsibilities.

Payslips from each employer.

For self-employed candidates or those working in family businesses without payslips, proof such as company registration, relevant licences or taxes paid.

The official policy also provides a points schedule for work experience. Candidates should refer to that schedule when calculating their expected score.

6. Important rules for academic scores and professional qualifications

CGPA conversion: IIM Calcutta follows the conversion method prescribed by the candidate’s university or institution. If no conversion scheme exists, the percentage is calculated as CGPA divided by maximum possible CGPA, multiplied by 100.

Integrated and dual degrees: If undergraduate and postgraduate marks are not reported separately, postgraduate marks may be treated as undergraduate marks for eligibility and composite-score calculations. For candidates still pursuing an integrated master’s or dual degree directly after Class 12, marks up to August 3, 2026 will be considered.

Professional qualifications: CA, ICWA, CS and Fellow of the Institute of Actuaries of India (FIAI) are considered in the academic-diversity criteria, depending on the candidate’s other qualifications.

Final-year candidates: Degree-completion certificates must be issued by the prescribed deadline, and final documents must be submitted by September 30, 2027, wherever applicable.

7. Final admission, reservation and other rules

Final offers are based on category-wise merit lists using the final composite score.

Meeting the minimum criteria at any stage does not automatically qualify a candidate for admission.

Misrepresentation of information can lead to disqualification, with further action at IIM Calcutta’s discretion.

Admission offers cannot be deferred to a subsequent year.

IIM Calcutta follows the Government of India’s reservation policy for Central Educational Institutions. 5% of seats are reserved for Persons with Benchmark Disabilities, as specified under the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act, 2016. A valid certificate must be furnished during the PI.

Disputes concerning MBA admissions for the 2027–29 batch fall under the jurisdiction of competent courts within Kolkata.

What does this mean for CAT 2026 aspirants?

  1. CAT remains important, but the interview matters most in the final round. CAT carries 56 out of 85 points during PI-WAT shortlisting, while PI alone carries 48% of the final score.
  2. Class 10 and 12 scores can influence your interview call. Together, they account for 25 out of 85 points at the shortlisting stage.
  3. Your academic background can affect your final score. Non-engineering degrees and certain professional qualifications receive academic-diversity points, with the exact score depending on the qualification combination.
  4. Work experience must be documented properly. Only eligible post-bachelor’s employment is counted, and supporting documents are required.
  5. Clearing the minimum CAT cutoff is only the first step. Actual interview shortlisting depends on composite scores and category-wise decisions by the institute.

This article is based on IIM Calcutta’s admission policy for the MBA batch of 2027–2029. Candidates should consult the official policy for the complete work-experience points schedule and detailed qualification conditions.
