Mathews Benny: Best 50 | India's Most Promising Incoming MBA Students 2025 | MDI Gurgaon
Mathews Benny is pursuing his PGDM at MDI Gurgaon. An Electronics and Communication Engineering graduate with honours, he began his career with Deloitte USI in Risk and Financial Advisory, working on IT-risk and compliance engagements for Fortune 500 clients. He received the Deloitte Spot Award for his accountability and early impact. At MDI, he contributes to Opsession, the Operations Club. Previously, as Placement Coordinator at Mar Athanasius College of Engineering, he helped facilitate opportunities for nearly 600 students and led TEDxMACE operations.
In 2018, when floods devastated Kerala, Mathews joined relief efforts with friends. They waded through chest-deep water to deliver food packets, helped people onto makeshift rafts, and carried medicines to elderly couples. Long nights in relief camps showed him the value of showing up when people need help, even when no one is keeping score. The experience reshaped how he thinks about achievement.
He worked with Deloitte USI in the Risk & Financial Advisory practice, specializing in IT risk and compliance for Fortune 500 clients. His role involved assessing IT General Controls (GITCs), conducting SOX testing, and supporting external audits to ensure the integrity of clients financial reporting processes. He collaborated with cross-functional teams to identify control gaps, recommend remediation, and strengthen governance frameworks. The role gave him exposure to diverse industries and sharpened his skills in risk assessment, regulatory compliance, and stakeholder management, while instilling a strong foundation in problem-solving and client service.
Mathews stands out for the level of effort he brings to a challenge. He sees each situation as a chance to learn and improve, whether the circumstances demand resilience or swift action. This approach helps him adapt, keep moving through adversity, and make the most of opportunities for both himself and the teams he works with.
Mathews brings intensity, adaptability, and ownership to his work. At Deloitte, he learned to break down complex problems, manage detail-heavy compliance work, and meet demanding deadlines. His leadership experience, including coordinating placements for nearly 600 students and leading TEDx operations, strengthened his ability to align stakeholders, mobilise teams, and work through ambiguity. He combines analytical discipline with accountability and empathy.
Mathews is working on patience in decision-making. He is accustomed to momentum, whether in college placements, Deloitte audit deliverables, or sport, but has learned that not every problem benefits from a quick answer. At MDI, he is practising pausing before reacting in case discussions, group projects, and peer issues. The aim is to balance urgency with listening and better judgment.
One aspect he believes strengthens his candidature is the blend of analytical rigor and people-centric leadership he brings. At Deloitte, he was recognized with a Spot Award for his accountability and impact, which taught him the value of delivering under pressure in high-stakes client environments. Beyond work, he has consistently embraced leadership roles, whether coordinating placement activities for 600+ students in college or leading team-building initiatives during leadership visits at Deloitte. These experiences shaped his ability to balance structure with empathy, collaborate across diverse groups, and drive outcomes. He sees this adaptability, along with his curiosity to keep learning, as a unique strength that he carries forward into every professional challenge.
