Sambarna Ghosal: Best 50 | India's Most Promising Incoming MBA Students 2025 | Indian Institute of Management Shillong

Sambarna is a dynamic individual from Kolkata, currently pursuing her MBA at IIM Shillong. A chemical engineer by education, she has nearly three years of experience in engineering consulting, where she honed her analytical and problem-solving skills. While engineering nurtured her left-brain thinking, she is now keen to explore her creative side and strengthen her right-brain capabilities. Having grown up watching her father thrive as a regional sales manager, she was always fascinated by the world of business, leadership, and team building. Though her academic excellence (among the top 0.01 percentile in her boards) led her to the sciences and eventually engineering, she discovered along the way that she enjoys working with people and driving impact through collaboration. With a strong management foundation, she envisions herself in roles where she can lead teams and shape businesses, whether in HR, marketing, or as a market consultant.

A moderate CAT percentile initially left Sambarna discouraged, but she continued preparing for the parts of the admission process she could influence. She revisited current affairs, refined her SOPs, practised mock interviews, and sought mentorship. Her work experience had already developed communication skills, clarity of goals, and self-awareness. The effort led to an IIM Shillong offer and strengthened her ability to respond constructively to setbacks.

She worked as a Junior Process Design Engineer at Worley India, a leading global engineering consultancy in the energy, chemicals, and resources sector. Her role primarily involved developing and reviewing process deliverables such as data sheets, PFDs, and equipment specifications for large-scale projects in mining, metals, and minerals. Beyond technical work, she also contributed to digital transformation initiatives and supported internal communications, branding, and employee engagement through the cultural committee. This dual exposure gave her a balance of technical expertise and organizational collaboration, strengthening both her analytical and people-oriented skills.

What sets her apart from other MBA students is the mindset with which she entered this journey. She did not come with the expectation of securing the highest-paying job or joining the consulting race race. Instead, she came with clarity about what she wanted to learn and the kind of career she wishes to build. Having worked for nearly three years in engineering consulting, she realized that her true interest lies in roles where she can combine analytical skills with people-centric problem solving. At IIM Shillong, she is consciously shaping her learning path to align with this vision. Rather than chasing immediate outcomes, she is investing in developing long-term capabilities that will help her create meaningful impact in business and society. To deepen this journey, she is planning to take up a research project next year in sustainability or marketing, areas where she sees both personal fulfillment and future opportunities.

One of her strongest skills is the ability to stay calm and deliver effectively under pressure by balancing multiple responsibilities. A defining experience was in January 2024, one of the busiest months of her career. Alongside working on a battery minerals project with tight daily targets, she was tasked with leading a site visit to the Haldia IOCL plant for young engineers, while also serving on the internal communications and cultural committee to organize Republic Day celebrations. With overlapping deadlines and responsibilities, she felt overwhelmed initially. She managed the situation by creating detailed checklists, breaking tasks into time blocks, delegating wherever possible, and proactively communicating with stakeholders to set expectations. This structured approach ensured all deliverables were met on time. The site visit was executed safely and smoothly, and the Republic Day event was well-received internally. The experience strengthened her skills in structured multitasking, stakeholder management, and proactive communication.

She is actively working on developing her adaptability in dynamic business environments. Coming from an engineering background, she was accustomed to structured problem-solving. However, management scenarios often require flexibility, quick decision-making, and balancing multiple perspectives. At IIM Shillong, she is consciously pushing herself to step out of her comfort zone by taking up collaborative projects, engaging in diverse discussions, and learning to think on her feet. This skill is crucial for leadership roles in HR, marketing, or consulting, where navigating ambiguity and driving solutions while keeping people at the center becomes essential.

What she believes strengthens her candidature is the clarity and balance she brings to her journey. Unlike many who enter an MBA with only external benchmarks in mind, she came with a clear vision of what she wants to learn and how she wants to grow. Her background in engineering consulting gave her the discipline of structured problem-solving, while her active involvement in internal communications, cultural events, and employee engagement allowed her to nurture creativity, collaboration, and people skills. This blend of left-brain analytical ability and right-brain creativity makes her adaptable to both technical and people-centric challenges. She also carries a long-term perspective. She is not chasing immediate outcomes but focusing on building sustainable expertise. With plans to take up a research project in sustainability or marketing, she is committed to applying her learning in ways that create impact both for businesses and society.
