Sattrajit Mukherjee: Best 50 | India's Most Promising Incoming MBA Students 2025 | XLRI Jamshedpur
Sattrajit Mukherjee grew up in Kolkata and studied at Ramakrishna Mission, Rahara, before pursuing Metallurgical Engineering at Jadavpur University. He began his career at Tata Steel, where he worked as a manager and helped commission an advanced metal-coating line. His responsibilities included conducting trials, setting parameters, and managing cross-functional teams. He joined XLRI to explore the business side of industrial operations. Outside work, he enjoys detective fiction, history, politics, cricket, and mountain treks.
Sattrajit's proudest achievement is receiving a Triple Gold Medal as the top performer in his discipline during undergraduate studies. The result followed more than 24 months of isolation during COVID and the loss of his grandmother, who had been a major influence in his life. He relied on a simple routine to stay focused, and the final result reinforced his belief in steady effort during difficult periods.
At Tata Steel's Kalinganagar Division, Sattrajit worked on the core team commissioning two advanced metal-coating lines, the company's first in-house end-to-end commissioning effort. He conducted equipment trials and safety audits, set parameters, handled material management, and coordinated operations, mechanical, and electrical teams. While managing more than 80 people and multiple domestic and international vendors, he worked with the OEM on a new workflow. He also contributed to defect reduction, design changes, and TQM initiatives for future operations.
Sattrajit sees coachability as a defining quality. Across technology and people-management settings, he has learned quickly when the work demanded it. He is applying that learning mindset to AI tools, combining his technical background with an interest in their ethical and business implications.
The Greenfield commissioning project gave Sattrajit experience in a high-stakes setting involving multiple stakeholders, large budgets, and tight timelines. It developed his technical confidence, adaptability, and ability to prioritise under pressure. His cross-functional and ground-level exposure also strengthened his understanding of people and his ability to handle conflict constructively.
Sattrajit is actively learning about AI, from use cases to its technical basics. He sees AI skills as increasingly important for remaining relevant and contributing effectively. While he does not yet consider himself highly proficient, he intends to keep learning as technology evolves.
Alongside academics, Sattrajit has balanced sport and professional responsibility. He earned a seat at a top-15 engineering institute and scored the 99.87th percentile in XAT to join XLRI. Cricket has remained a constant: he captained his departmental college team and represented Tata Steel divisions, including at international stadiums. These experiences developed team spirit, composure under pressure, and perspective in both success and failure.
