- Shared First-Year Curriculum with PGP
During the first year, PGP-ABM students attend the same classes and study the same curriculum as PGP students. This provides a broad-based management education and equal interaction with peers from both streams. It’s an excellent opportunity to build networks and friendships that extend beyond the agri-business field.

2. Drawbacks of PGP-ABM
- Limited Exposure to Agri-Business Opportunities
Despite the program's agri-business orientation, many PGP-ABM students end up in sectors outside of agriculture. If your interest lies squarely in exploring and excelling in the agri-business domain, the program may not fully meet your expectations due to its broader placement focus.
- Fewer Elective Choices in the Second Year
While the first year provides the same curriculum as PGP, the second year presents a constraint for PGP-ABM students. The number of electives they can choose from is relatively very limited (2-3) compared to PGP students, which might restrict academic exploration based on individual interests.
- Reduced Chances for Student Exchange Programs
One of the coveted opportunities during an MBA is participating in international student exchange programs. Unfortunately, PGP-ABM students have fewer slots available for these programs, with eligibility primarily determined by CGPA. This means that fewer students from this stream get the chance to gain global exposure.

3. What Would I Do?
Now comes the critical question: should you join the PGP-ABM program if offered admission? In my honest opinion, the decision largely depends on your priorities and career aspirations.
If you are passionate about pursuing a career in general management and don’t mind stepping outside the agri-business domain for placements, the program could still be an excellent choice. Its commonality with PGP in the first year, shared facilities, and common placements ensure that you’re not missing out on the core aspects of an MBA from a prestigious institute like IIM Lucknow.
However, if your primary goal is to specialize and build a career exclusively in agri-business, the program may fall short of expectations. Limited elective choices in the second year and fewer core agri-business opportunities in placements can be restrictive, especially if you’re seeking deeper academic or professional exploration in this niche. This constraint might make the program less appealing for candidates aiming for specialized roles aligned directly with their agri-business aspirations.
Additionally, if you have offers from other reputed MBA programs, it’s worth carefully weighing your options. Compare the scope and alignment of each program with your career goals, considering factors like curriculum, industry opportunities, and flexibility, to make the best decision.

4. Conclusion
The PGP-ABM program at IIM Lucknow offers unique advantages, especially for those seeking general management opportunities. The shared curriculum and placements ensure that you get an experience similar to PGP students, which is a significant benefit. However, the program does have its limitations in terms of electives, student exchange opportunities, and specialized focus on agri-business.
From my perspective, if I were offered admission to the PGP-ABM program and my goal was to leverage an IIM brand for broader management roles, I would confidently accept it. However, if I were solely focused on niche agri-business roles, I might explore alternatives offering a more targeted curriculum and opportunities.
Ultimately, your decision should hinge on what aligns best with your long-term aspirations. Good luck with your journey!
