For years, education has had a fundamental limitation.

At ISB, Professor Anand Nandkumar gave his MBA students access to an AI tutor for his Strategic Innovation Management course.
What makes this example particularly interesting is how the AI was built around the course itself.
Professor Nandkumar created a separate AI chatbot for each session. The chatbots were trained on the course's cases, readings, slides, news articles and video transcripts. Students could interact with the material before class, ask questions, explore different perspectives and come better prepared for the session.
This is where the idea of an AI tutor becomes much more useful than simply opening a general chatbot and asking it a question.
The AI has context. It understands the material students are studying, the cases they are discussing and the concepts they are expected to learn. A student can therefore continue engaging with the course even when the class has ended.
The professor's expertise still remains at the centre of the course. But the course material itself can now become interactive.
That changes the relationship between students and learning.
Teachers Are Beginning to Get AI Assistants
The same shift is happening from the other side of the classroom as well.
Teachers have always had to manage a difficult challenge. A classroom can have dozens of students, each with different levels of understanding and different questions. Some students need additional help with the basics. Others want to go deeper into the subject.
Providing every student with that level of individual attention has always been difficult simply because teachers have limited time.
AI can help extend that time and support.
An AI assistant can potentially help students revisit concepts, answer questions based on course material and continue learning outside classroom hours. IIT Madras Is Taking the Idea to Thousands of Students
IIT Madras has also been building an AI-powered learning experience for students.
The AI Learning Companion was first piloted with 500 IIT Madras students. It included a 24/7 AI Teaching Assistant, an AI Interview Companion, auto-generated notes, flashcards and personalised revision.
The pilot resulted in 44% more successful coding submissions, and the initiative is being rolled out to more than 35,000 students.
The scale of this experiment is what makes it particularly significant.
This is no longer just about a student opening a chatbot to ask a question. Institutions are beginning to think about how AI can become a part of the larger learning experience.
A student preparing for an exam may need help revising concepts. Someone preparing for an interview may need a different kind of support. Another student may want notes, flashcards or additional practice.
Instead of every student having to find a different tool for every requirement, institutions can begin building learning companions around the actual needs of their students.
Students Are Getting an AI Version of Their Course
Perhaps the most interesting part of this shift is what institutions are actually building.
Imagine an AI model designed around a specific subject and trained using the institution's curriculum, textbooks and case studies.
Students can use it to clear doubts, revise concepts, practise questions and prepare for exams.
In many ways, students are beginning to get an AI version of their course.
The difference matters.
A general AI model has access to a vast amount of information, but a learning companion built around a particular course can provide context around what the student is actually studying.
It can understand the material prescribed for that course. It can be built around the concepts the institution wants students to learn. It can bring together different parts of the learning experience that would otherwise remain scattered across lectures, readings, notes and other resources.
